I'd have to agree after last night and tonight.  A few things to blame, first off, when was sean berry ever a great hitter? even a good one?  Ok, 2ndly, hey coop! Pence is NOT a 2 hole hitter.  He won't make contact that much and will hit for power but has a HUGE strikeout issue he needs to address, too much of a free swinger for anything before 5th.  Lastly, again we can't hit with RISP.  Why? I don't have the slightest idea.

well, i got to give credit to the Padres pitching. They have the best 1-2 starters (idk how to correctly say that) in all of baseball, and it'll always be tough to score off of them, regardless of the team. They also have a really good bullpen, and one of the greatest closers ever. we'll start producing eventually (knock on wood)

It's frustrating, because the biggest question mark in our line-up (Bourn) is the only guy doing his job. When you have a lead-off hitter getting on base that much, and getting himself into scoring position at that, your 8-year veteran hitters had damn sure better be able to drive him in.

I'm frustrated with Berkman and Lee, to say the least. Pence gets a freebie for now, but Berkman and Lee have no excuse. Stop swinging for the fences already and just punch a single through the infield. That's all we need when Bourn is on second and we're playing in San Diego.

Yeh looks like a repeat of last year but keep in mind we were facing Peavy and Young.

You guys made some good points - Its only the first two games and we were facing a tough 1-2 pitching matchup, still our bats (Lee, Berkman) should have done better. I was pleased overall with Backe's effort, its nice to see him healthy again.

I think Pence makes an adequate 2nd hitter.  Sure his slugging could be a little bit higher with less strikeouts, but who is the alternative? Matsui?  He whiffs just about as much and will most certianly not hit for as high an average as Pence. IMO.

If Pence isn't hitting second, the only other spot for him would be 6th.  If he continues on his tear the Astros would have a over .300 hitter batting 6th in the lineup!?  That makes less sense than him batting 2nd.

If the Astros 3,4 and 5 hitters ever start getting it going this year the number 2 hole hitter should be getting pitches to hit.  No one wants to face a hot berkman, lee, and tejada with extra runners on.

Well I personally like Mark Loretta in the 2 hole.  The 2nd hitters job is to hit for a good average and be able to place hits and bunt.  Contact should be made regularly, Pence, is known for being a free-swinging strikeout guy who gets into some but is not the consistent bat we need at number 2.  Plus I don't think I want Pence bunting over Bourn when he could be swinging.  Mark Loretta should be the 2 hole and Pence should be 6.

Just because he is 6th doesn't mean he is bad.  Sophomore slumps often times happen and don't think Pence is immune to that!  Secondly, when you have a 3, 4, 5 lineup of Lee, Berkman, Tejada then I don't think batting 6th is considered underrated or a poor batting position.

P.S. How about Bourn swiping those bags left and right.  We finally have a leadoff guy.
