It's gotta be Troy Glaus' defense down at third. I won't even start to look up his stats but they are not pretty. I just watched him field a normal ground ball down at third and he picked it up all goofy, through it over to pujols, pujols had to scoop it oughtta the dirt. We got the out but it was just one of those plays that just looked ugly. Maybe we were too spoiled with arguably one of the best defensive third basemen of all time. In one single year, we have lost half of our defense. No more Edmonds but no more Rolen. Out with the old, in with the new I guess they say.
He also threw an easy play at the plate away. Hopefully his bat will make up for any lack in defense. Of course they should have never pitched to Holliday in that situation either.
It was pretty pathetic that they only scored one run off of Kip Wells too.
On the FSN Rocky Mtn broadcast, the announcers were begging Willy Tavarez to bunt down the third base line and make Glaus make a play. But I don't think that's their main unseen flaw. Its their lack of speed anywhere in the lineup.

Barton has speed, Skip has a little as do Miles and Kennedy. Rasmus will bring lots of speed when he is called up. But for the most part, I agree, not enough speed.
Troy Glaus has never been known as a good defensive third baseman. Scott Rolen was a great fielder for the Cardinals and it will be hard for Glaus to follow him defensively. What Glaus does provide offensively should help offset his defensive short comings.
I think we all knew this coming into the season. We were getting rid of defensive Rolen for Offensive Glaus. Nobody claimed Glaus was a defensive stud. Plus, the trade worked out good because it ended the Rolen - TLR fued.
On a brighter note, Flores and Izzy looked good. However, Franklin blew our win...&%$*#&.
remember he is also coming off an arem injury that may still be hurting him. Rolen would have done the same thing and has many times......We should trade for Joe Crede from the White Sox and that would solve the problems at 3rd.....Crede also has a great bat to bring with him.
I would much rather have Springer pitch 8th innings more than Franklin. Flores was very impressive as well despite that walk. McClellan should have stayed in 1 more inning and then bring in Springer in the 8th. Ron Villone was great in ST, looking forward to seeing him pitch also.
I wanna see Barton get a start and see what happens.
I watched Glaus play in Arizona in '04 and it wasn't pretty. Yeah, he may get a long ball knock every 15 AB's or so but what he does in the other 14 doesn't amount to anything productive. Too many K's with runs on base. He has no idea what a productive out is.
I say look at the positives... He will have more walkoffs or go ahead RBIs then he will have errors that blow the lead or the game.
It would have been nice to win opening day. Especially after the way the game Monday night started, but it's too long a season to start nitpicking. I am still a Glaus fan because, well, he plays for my team. So right now he gets the benifit of the doubt from me.
I would rather have a healthy Glaus over an injured Rolen any day. As I was watching the game last night, I heard the announcers talking about Rolen being out for 2 months because of a broken finger. Glaus may not be as good defensively as Rolen, but at least we don't have to worry about him taking way too much time off for injuries most people just suck up and play through.
