Jumping ahead a bit, where do you see the Cougars ranked by the end of December?

Assuming they go undefeated, like they should, they will most likely be in top five of the BCS standings. Starting the season ranked as high as they should will guarantee such a final ranking, if they go undefeated.
No. 1 will not happen this season. BYU will have to win a BCS game before voters would ever even consider ranking them No. 1, especially after the Hawai'i debacle last season. So, if BYU goes all the way this year, including winning a BCS game, they'll have a chance for an improbable No. 1 ranking in '09.

I am very confident in BYU this upcoming season. There offense will be explosive considering only losing there center, and maybe a few impact players being recruited. Im happy to see DiLuigi finally get to play this year, he was one of the reasons i think we didn't win those 2 games. There defense will have to step it up a bit, but im not to worried about them. Lets just hope we can win those close ones this year and make a run for the BCS!!!!
GO COUGS!!!!!

Poll voters have never liked doling out 1st place votes to mid major schools. Also, the computer ranking and "strength of schedule" help lower a viable school's ranking.
Assuming that the Cougs go undefeated and win a BCS bowl game, I see them somewhere between 6 and 10. That stings to have to say that; because I feel that the whole "mid major" labeling is stupid. The "who have you played" arguement comes in. The "your conference is weak" arguement comes it. The problem will never be solved. However, just by going undefeated, the Cougars will have a MAJOR accomplishment that only a handfull of schools in the nation will be able to stake clame to (if even that many).
My biggest worry is that BYU will have to play a weak BCS school just as the Utes did. Then any viability they may have built throughout the season will be stripped away, because they played a weak team in their bowl.

Hey great responses everybody. I put the cougars at somewhere between 6 and 10, as a few others have as well. It seems to be the general consensus that BYU has a perfectly legitimate shot at going undefeated in the regular season. I can go with that. It may or may not happen (obviously), but I really believe we can do it. Any undefeated team, even with a few games still left, should be put at LEAST be in the top 15. Seeing as the cougars finished #14 in both major polls last season, we'd have to be in the top ten. Unfortunately, I just don't see BYU getting any higher in '08 (unless we blow everybody out by 50). Frankly, I'm OK with that. If we want to be recognized as an elite program, we've got to win year in and year out. Things are looking good so far, though, wouldn't you say?

You have to look at past history, guys. In 2004, Utah played a soft MWC scheduel, beat one average BCS team, one poor BCS team, and the lowest ranked opponent in a BCS bowl ever; and they finished with a No. 4 ranking. In 2006, BSU played an always soft WAC schedule, beat one average BCS team, and a very decent BCS bowl opponent, and finished ranked No. 5.
If BYU beats one average BCS team, one poor BCS team, one decent BCS bowl opponent, in addition to what promises to be one of the strongest MWC schedules in recent memory, they will be a top 5 team. We have past history and precedent on this. Plus, BYU football starts out on a higher plane of respect than either Utah or BSU.

washington i think will be a little better this season. possibly a bowl team. and i think ucla will be a little more respectable this season. norm chow there scares me. he has succeeded everywhere he's coached and i think he will make ucla's offense one of the best in the pac 10. road wins to tcu and utah would be no pushovers. if we got to the bcs we'd probably be in florida at the orange bowl playing the acc champ unless they're in the title, so it'd probably be like a clemson or virginia tech. a win there and we'd for sure be in the top five.
