Yeah, great article.  The Paul O'Neils are few and far between in the free agent world, building from within is the way to go.

Time will tell whether or not the restocking plans have born fruit.  In addition to drafting well, you have to develop your talent and assemble a roster whose parts are mutually complementary.  I still think it's an endeavor where luck is a seriously underrated part of the process.

Regarding O'Neill, if memory serves he was not a premium FA pickup, when he came over from the Reds, right?  He was a guy with some tools that had never managed to put it all together, and he blossomed in New York, no?

At the time, it caused an uproar. How do you trade your starting CF for a platoon RF?

Stick knew what he was doing but everyone thought he had lost it. Who would have guessed what would have happened to their respective careers after that?...well, besides Gene Michael.
