It might be easier to make this argument if we knew the exact criteria these committees use to determine the Player of the Year award. Is it pure talent? Is it talent, attitude, and team record? Is it purely stats? If it's stats, are they just individual or do team stats play in? How heavily are those team stats weighed? etc. There is no set equation. I think everyone knew Shaq was better than Christian Laettner, but Laettner was the best player on the best team...actually I think Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill were better, but anyway.
Is Beasley the most talented player in the country? Probably. He is a rare and special player who can play inside or out. However, he has not been able to carry his team to an elite level like Danny Manning did with Kansas in 88.
On the other hand, Hansbrough is the best player on arguably the best team in the country. And he has carried his team since the loss of thier 2nd and 1st string point guards. He is clearly one of the top big men in the country. And, yes, his heart and tenacity help distinguish him from the pack.
Bottom line, Hansbrough is deserving of the award.
