I'll really miss Brent Barry, rg13, he's a great guy and very smart on the court.

Elson was OK, but we already signed Stoudamire, so he kinda, sorta keeps the offensive level Brent offered on par. But Kurt Thomas, he's way better than Elson for our team.

This actually makes the Spurs much more dangerous than you think...

Ummmm how did the Spurs WAY overpay for an avg. PF? Francisco Elson was hardly getting any playing time and was doing absolutly nothing to begin with (3ppg/3 rebs per game) while Brent Berry has been hurt for half of the season and has been pushed out of the Spurs rotation in favor of Ime Udoka.

Please tell me how the Spurs over paid???? They did give up a 2009 #1 draft pick but who cares.....The Spurs Ian Mahinmi and Tiago Spiltter coming over in the next few years. With the way you're talking, I'm sure you have never heard of either one of these players but, the same can be said for Tony Parker and Manu Ginobilli before they came over. Trust me, the Spurs made a smart move. Kurt Thomas will give the Spurs the much needed  "muscle" for the playoffs coming up, plus he gives us a much needed rebounder and can hit the open 15-18 ft jumping. He's just another "savy -vet" that's coming to get a ring an San Antonio.

Call'em old, call'em stupid for doind the trade. But, at the end of the year you will once again be calling the San Antonio Spurs.....CHAMPS!!!!!!!

I didn't know what to think about the trade at first but, I'm not a complete moron.  I thought about it and even if the Spurs didn't need to make a trade It looks like something that will actually help the team.  Not like Fat Slow Shaq to the Suns or, Kidd getting schooled by Chris Paul to the Mavs.  Thomas can actually fit into the Spurs team and help them win another Ring.

Stop hating because your team can't beat the Spurs.  They can't even beat the Worriers.

I think the last time we played when it counts we did beat your san antonio spares, I also belive it was very publicized last year when manu called Stephen Jackson and thanked him for putting the Mavs out because they didnt think they could beat us. To the other idiot that said it was a good trade Brent Barry was your best three point threat and elson was a tough defender, Kurt Thomas offers neither one of those skills.

Cap Friendly trade

Not only do the Spurs get better today...they insure another decade of excellence...

The Spurs don't make ridiculous cap-unfriendly reaching trades like Shaq.

They get the one guy in the league who has frustrated duncan in an expiring contract year for Francisco Elson and a hurt Barry.

By throwing in the pick, they insure that 2010 will have only one player Duncan signed long term.

I am salivating at the idea of making a run for say LeBron James or another type player in 2010.  And then resigning Ginobli & parker over the cap!!!

And just for good measure, they will probably re-sign a buyout Barry in 30 days (30 days he wasn't playing anyway).

..........

I can't wait to see LA, Phoenix, and Dallas completely cap-saddled the next 3 years+.

You're post shows how much you know about the Spurs; absolutely nothing.

Brent Barry was our best three point shooter, yes, but his game lacked in many other ascepts due to his age and became more of a one demensional player. Elson, except for little spurts, was garbage. Calling him a tough defender is a joke after seeing him give up easy assignments on a daily basis. Kurt Thomas gives us a better chance to win anything. He is one of the best interior defender and has been for quite some time. He cause also bring down boards something Elson could not do. With him an Oberto next to Tim it will draw more attention away from Duncan and allow him to establish more of an offense. Thomas is a nice jump shooter as well which helps our offense.

Kurt Thomas isn't gonna be the difference between a ring an not, he gives them like another .1% chance improvement. If the Spurs win it this year, it isn't because of thomas.  To be honest, if i were the spurs, i wouldn't of sent just Brent Barry for Kurt Thomas.  Not to mention a 1st round pick.  (Elson doesn't count).  Barry is a great shooter and knows the game very well.  And im sure you could of got a better player then Kurt with that 1st round pick.  They might not of these few past years in the draft with that late pick, but they shouldn't throw it away, they should get a better scouting team.

lest anyone forget...

The first round pick is a 2009 lottery protected pick.

The Spurs realize that they are an aging team.  If for whatever reason they struggle in 2 years, they won't have to part with a pick lower than #12 overall.

Compare to the Mavericks and Suns foolish unprotected picks.

The Mavs should be okay as they are young enough that the pick might not be ver high.

But the suns are incredibly old and cap-inflexible, that 2010 pick is looking to be a lottery pick.
