Why would Pearl want to leave that? He has brought in good/amazing recruiting classes every year since he has been here. He has 42-2 record at Thompson-Boling. The stadium was just renovated and a new practice facility built. I am fairly sure he is now being paid as a top 10 coach. If not it is at least top 15-20. The fact is.... he has a chance to do something special at Tennessee. You see people jumping at the opportunity to take jobs at NC, Kansas, UCLA, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky etc. He is getting just as good of recruits as they are. If he leaves it not only contradicts everything he has ever said but that would be stupid of him in my opinion. If he stays here... he could be legendary. If he takes a job with one of those schools. He's just another great coach in a long list of great coaches for those schools. Basically he would be another notch in their belt. Here, he would be one of a kind when his career ended. I guess we'll see but unless Duke, NC, Kansas or NC came knocking on my door with a contract... I wouldn't even consider leaving. I may consider Texas as well but that would be about it. I just don't see what he would gain other than maybe a little more money and slightly better recruits.
“I’ve worked my whole life to be in a situation like this — a coach at a place like Tennessee,” Pearl said. “I’m all about commitment on both ends, and when you look at our facilities, and now this contract — that’s significant commitment.
“It’s never been my intention to go anywhere. I’m the coach at the University of Tennessee, and now it’s my job to go earn this money. I know this isn’t a great time financially for our state and our institution, so we’ll work as hard as we can to maintain our revenues and live up to this contract.”
We have a shot at the National Championship this year despite the losses of Lofton, J.Smith, R. Smith and Crews. I think at the very least we make the Elite 8. If top recruits continue to sign and the team continues to get high seeds/make runs in the tournament consistently, Pearl will be here for a looong time.
