The Yankees and Red Sox are both in hot pursuit of 3 year old Joshua Jones who has been on fire since getting his first wiffle bat and ball last week at Target. "Jones could be a 5 tool player" one anonymous scout said. The Cubs were also interested until Jones threw a temper tantrum. Said the Cubs rep, "Carlos Zambrano has said that he has exclusive rights to being the teams' hothead and would request a trade if Jones was signed".
Seriously... how long is it going to be before elementary school kids go pro? We already have collleges recruiting middle school basketballers, now professional teams are signing kids who aren't even old enough to drive a car in some states? I think this is a little over the top...
You are on the mark about the Yankees and Sox, that would be in character. It is unfortunate the buy a pennant mentality could possibly rub off on the A's.
if you are 16 and just got 4.5 mil to throw a baseball... you are probably going to end up like Mark Prior. I am a firm believer that teens should be limited to a pitch count, and only 6 mos a year of baseball. This kid will probably pitch the equivalent of 300 innings per year for 5 years straight.
in soccer in europe, kids are targeted from the age of 8 or 9. They will put 16 or 17 year olds on their starting squads. For major matches to have a 16-17 year old on the team isn't so unusual. So for a team to sign a guy at 16 would actually be considered a very late age over there. Personally I think there should be a rule against teams contacting kids who are so young, but that's just my opinion.
