His comments dance around the edges, like "Donaghy is a criminal who is trying to lessen his sentence" or "He is the only criminal out there", never "Donaghy is flat out lying, and the NBA would never fix games". Stern ranks right up there with the Godfather in this mess, and frankly needs to excuse himself from his position and get some fresh blood in there. Even Goodell went on the record with the Spygate thing and said it was over, that the league had everything and was done with it. Where is Stern on that front? Why won't he just come out and say Donaghy his lying? If he did that this would go away, but if continues to hedge around the situation, then he feeds the media machine.

There are too many mystery calls/non-calls, and too many protected stars to simply say Donaghy is lying and make it all go away. There are too many players and coaches complaining and trying to gain an edge for the issue of honest refereeing to go away. There is simply no way to say that how refs choose to referee a game does not influence the outcome.
Then toss in the idea of tilt either because it makes the hometown crowd happy, produces a better match up, or bias for the stars that the league says it is trying to promote and shy would the question go away.
The idea of independence of the refs from the league is potentially interesting. But how likely is the NBA to go for it and fund the ongoing oversight and training to produce consistently ref'd games when human error will be there for You Tube and sports center to see?

All I see is Stern attacking Donaghy's credibility. So far that tactic didnt work out just ask Jose Canseco, Brina McNamee and Matt Walsh. The guy who gets told that his reputation is a liar has turned out to be telling the truth all 3 times

Your comments are dead on. I agree with you. However, we all know why Stern won't admit it. MONEY!! That's all he cares about. He doesn't care about the integrity of the league or if a team with a long standing history on a city moves (ala Seattle). All he wants is MONEY!!!
Stern, in my opinion, is absolutely the most corrupt commissioner in sports, not just the NBA, but in all of sports and that includes European soccer.

"I think it's important to sit here and say to you that the accusations that we manipulate games that then get reported on ... the facts underlying those, they're false," Stern said. "We don't. And if you'd like me to repeat it again, I will tell you that we don't."
Does that sound like a denial?

What's keeping this story alive is the fact that the officiating in the NBA is very inconsistent, to say the least. As a Pistons fan, I often watch other players say and do things and not get a foul call on them, but if Rasheed Wallace did or said the same thing, he'd get a technical. Granted, Rasheed, his mouth, and his reputation are the cause of those technicals, but other players get away with much worse.
And why is it that just trying to defend against Dwyane Wade or LeBron James gets so many foul calls, but defending some nobody off the bench in the same manner gets no calls? Too much inconsistency feeds the fire that this scandal is creating. The NBA needs to work harder with the officials to make sure that a foul on one guy is a foul on any other guy.

Strange how the fouls in game 4 were even after Stern speech. The referees backed down on his command. The game was called fairly. Boston beat the Lakers on even ground. With one exception, Celtrics were the better team in game 4. No doubt. Look for LA to bounce back game 5. Series 3-2. Happy fathers's day.
