Mike Tranghese, who presided over the Big East's expansion from a basketball conference to one of college football's top-tier leagues, is leaving as commissioner next year.

Under Tranghese, the Big East eventually expanded to 16 schools to become the largest Division I-A conference in the nation, a move that saved the league when it appeared football would break it apart.

The league added five schools in 2005 following the high-profile defections of Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech -- all football powers -- to the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tranghese said the conference's ability to absorb those losses and remain intact was his proudest memory as commissioner.

"The vast majority of people wrote us off for dead," Tranghese said. "It was an interesting time, because I think you find out who your friends are."

Tranghese, who was commissioner during the league's inaugural football season in 1991, said he was pleased with the recent success of Big East schools on the gridiron. The conference now has an automatic BCS berth, and Tranghese said West Virginia's win over Georgia in the 2006 Sugar Bowl was a defining moment in his tenure

Before joining the Big East, Tranghese spent seven years as the sports information director at Providence. He succeeded Dave Gavitt as Big East commissioner in 1990. Both Gavitt and Tranghese made sure the conference had contracts with national networks such as CBS and ESPN, and Tranghese was the force behind the Big East Television Network, one of the most successful regional deals.

I would still like to see the Football side of things add more schools or have one of the other schools step up and field a Div I program.  They could use UConn as an example....

Maybe the new Commissioner could make this a priority

LL  there has been a lot of speculation about expanding the league, etc.  Do you think he's resigning because of opposition to expansion?  Does this mean change is coming?

No matter why he is leaving, Tranghese has done a terrific job as Big East commissioner.  Parhaps the new commissioner can get something done along the lines of football expansion that Tranghese could not accomplish.  The Big East and all it's supporters own this man alot of gratitude for his dedication in making the conference the success  it is today.  I wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

I'm not sure if Tanghese is opposed to change, as he is 64 years old and wants some retirement security.  Yeah, if the Big East were the SEC or Big 10 or Big 12, then he probably would do a few more years.  The Big East has been through a tremendous amount of heat, and overcame a lot of that, but you still hear about Big Ten or another conference eyeing our teams and  coaches.  The Big East is not rock solid yet...If another quality team jets off, then they've got another mess to deal with.

About adding more teams...I can't quite remember, but I think Tanghese added those Div. 2 schools to the conference when Miami, VT, and BC left.  Adding the decent basketball teams helped soften the blow of those three teams leaving and pad some more money to the conference.

Apparently (I found this info out by another poster who had done some research on it), I guess it's not  cut and dry for Div. 2 teams to come up to Div. 1 standards (in football)...There's a whole mess of criteria that goes along with that.  I was actually thinking the Big East should try to invite U of Delaware or Appalachian State, but they informed me that they would have to meet a whole mess of criteria, and for some schools it would take longer than others to meet it.

I saw one of the WV poster say (Sorry,I can't remember who it was), they had an idea for a Big East Div 1 conference and Big East Div 2 conference.  I thought that sounded like a good idea, and would solve the basketball vs. football problem.  However, there is probably red tape that goes along with that too.

I 'd like to see both conference sports excel.  I think BE basketball is pretty much there, but football is running just a little behind.  I think adding 1 quality (preferably BCS conference) div 1 football team would be excellent .  Then they could seek out another up and coming team who would fit well in the conference.

If the conference keeps doing well, it would have to be appealing to some quality football programs.  Maybe ones that get overshadowed with a grueling schedule, and have hopes to get there team name out there more, as well as add strength to the conference. ..Auburn seems into playing our teams recently .

Does anyone know who is being discussed as a replacement to Tranghese?  We need a strong presence in that position, especially on the football side.
