Annika Sorenstam is retiring at the end of the season, multiple sources close to the situation told Golfweek. The announcement is expected to come at a 2 p.m. ET press conference Tuesday at the Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J.

Two days ago Sorenstam collected her 72nd LPGA title at the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill. The Hall of Famer put off her wedding to fiancé Mike McGee until April 2009 in an effort to give one final push at catching World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa.

Sorenstam, 37, has hinted that she's on the back nine of her career for several seasons, indicating a wish to start a family and focus on other interests, including her golf academy, golf course architecture and her love of cooking.

Sorenstam became the first player in tour history to cross the $22 million mark in career earnings with her seven-stroke win at Kingsmill. When asked if she planned to return to Williamsburg in 2009 to defend, Sorenstam said "I hope so."

"I'm going to continue this year the way I started it and at the end of the year I always assess it like I have the last few years," Sorenstam said.

too bad, i hate it. she is by far ,my favorite female golfer. such class, and always acts like a lady. i'll miss her, but i guess she see's the writing on the wall with lorena widening the gap between them. michelle wie should stop and take notice of annika. annika exemplaifies all of the qualities that michelle is missing. great work ethic, humility, and above all CLASS!

iho.....

I wish her well! She put women's golf on the map, as far as I'm concerned. Always exemplified great sportsmanship and gave no excuses for her play. She talked with her great golf playing and gave great exposure for women's golf.

We will wish her well and thanks for the memories.......

It will be sad to say goodbye to the greatest female golfer of all time.  She has graced the athletic stage like very few others.  (Wilma Rudolph, Nancy Lopez, Chris Evertt, Nadia Comanici, and Althea Gibson to name a few).

Good write up Champ...thanks.

Very sad indeed......yet, she has to do what she wants to do.....like many great ones.....i remember it was so sad when Michael Jordan, Bjorn Borg retired......didn't quite feel it when Greg left because Tiger came in.

It would be sad if Tiger retired, which he will one day....and come to think of it, he will be 37 too in five years...and Annika's path ahead of him must be giving him some thoughts....with Sam growing up.......why push on?.....he doesnt need the money.....only for the love of the game.....only to break records and cross the 82 or 83 mark...and 18 Majors goal. Enjoy Tiger for another five years......

They aren't all going to be around forever.....

Tim

Watched the news conference of Anika .. 59... and was saddened although some hints were there over the past 2 yrs. I'm more awed by her performance over the last 2 yrs considering her health & personal circumstances. She always conducted herself in a very professional manner that reminds me of the King, Unfortunately for me she withdrew from the Canadian Open here in Vancouver so I did not get to personally observe her in action.
She certainly set the BAR very high for the ladies & it is great to see Lorena beginning to ascend .

Ms. Sorenstam will definitely be missed!

WHILE SORENSTAM RETIRES AT THE END OF THE SEASON WE SHOULD LOOK BACK AT AN AWESOME CAREER.  SHE WILL SURELY BE MISSED. I APPLAUDE HER FOR WALKING AWAY AT THE TOP OF HER GAME, INSTEAD OF STAYING UNTIL SHE CAN NO LONGER PLAY.

I FOR ONE WILL WELCOME HER BACK WITH OPEN ARMS IF THE TIME SHOULD COME, IF NOT GOOD LUCK  TO ANNIKA.

This is gonna be a major blow to the LPGA.  Anna is a class act and one of the best females to ever play the game.  But as a side note.  I can't watch her swing.  That head coming up like David Duval makes me flinch.  I kinda live by the rule that.... "if you want to see a bad shot... just look up"  I know why she does it but I just can't watch.  But still she has been fantastic for the game.  She'll be sorely missed.

Well, she's earned it but I hate to see her go so soon. I can understand her wanting to retire while she's on top (even with Ochoa winning the way she has this year, Sorenstam is still 3 for 8 in tournaments she's played!), but the LPGA definitely won't be the same without her. I look forward to some good head-to-head competition between her and Ochoa before she retires at the end of the year. I think she'll hold her own, and go out with her head held high.
