Sorry guys, I missed last week, but I promise to make it up to you by posting a blog with the current Pythagorean Theorem rankings for the MLB.

So the the every present weekly question is... where should the Oakland Athletics be ranked in the Weekly MLB Power Rankings?

We are technically own the best record in the AL (by winning percentage), but are tied with the Boston Red Sox in terms of the Standings (that is, if we were to be in the same division we'd be tied for first with them), simply because they've played more games than us. So to start it off, I always have to ask... Who in the AL is better than the Athletics?

The only teams that really compare to the A's so far this season are the Red Sox and the Angels. The next tier down in the AL would include the Indians, White Sox and Rays, but they're not quite in the same class as the first three teams. Comparing runs scored to runs against the Athletics edge out the Red Sox while the Angels trail far behind. Also, this week Oakland went 4-2 (Orioles, Rangers) while Boston went 3-4 (Tigers, Twins) so we'll give the edge there to the A's as well, ranking them #1 in the AL, Red Sox #2, Angels #3. Due to standings, runs scored/against and the previous week's records we'll rank the next AL teams Rays, Indians, White Sox, Twins giving us...
  1. Athletics -- Pitching beats...
  2. Red Sox -- ...Hitting. Period.
  3. Angels -- And Oakland has even hit more than LA too.
  4. Rays -- Riding 5 game win streak against Toronto, LA, New York
  5. Indians -- 5-2 Last week
  6. White Sox -- Buoyed by high runs scored to runs against ratio
  7. Twins -- Took a series from Boston, dropped one to Chicago
  8. Yankees -- Merely playing .500 ball, I don't care about the names they have or how much they pay them
  9. Blue Jays
  10. Rangers
  11. Orioles
  12. Royals
  13. Tigers
  14. Mariners
So that's how I shake down the AL. It's late and I'm tired, so I'll be quick with the NL... The top tier of the NL includes the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Braves and Marlins. I think only the Cubs are actually better than the Athletics due to the Diamondbacks recent slump. I include the Braves simply because they've had so many hard luck losses and they've played better than their record shows. The Astros could also be mentioned in that group because of their recent performance.

In closing, I think the A's should be ranked #2, behind the Cubs and ahead of the Red Sox... and in searching the web... no one else agrees with me. Here's what Fox (#8), ESPN (#1) TSN (#6), and Sporting News (#2) have to say... what do you think?

This is the latest from Sean Deveney on the 12th. I always like this guys rankings more the most of the so called experts.

1. Boston Red Sox. There was no one who looked more surprised about those two blown saves last week than Jonathan Papelbon. Well, maybe the Gatorade cooler he knocked around.

2. Oakland Athletics. In the span of about an hour, Rich Harden made his first big league appearance in more than a month and bolstered the A’s already strong pitching staff. In the same hour, his ERA went from 0.82 to 3.68.

3. Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are second in the majors with a 14-6 home record. The Padres are worst in the league with a 6-14 road record. Padres start a series at Wrigley Field tonight. I’m not a betting man, but call your bookies.

4. Florida Marlins. Remember when it was the offense carrying these guys? Well, over the course of their seven-game winning streak, the Marlins pitching staff has a 2.00 ERA.

5. Tampa Bay Rays. Supposed to be that the Rays would do well generally, but struggle against the AL East powers. They’re now 15-11 against their own division.

6. St. Louis Cardinals. A caveat before we go too crazy on the Cards: They’ve played 30 of their 39 games against teams that currently have sub-.500 records.

7. Arizona Diamondbacks. Their foray into being one of the top teams in the NL didn’t go so well. They’re now 17-5 against the weak NL West and 6-10 against everyone else.

8. Los Angeles Angels. John Lackey returns Wednesday, which is very good news because Dustin Moseley, even when healthy, belongs in the bullpen, and Nick Adenhart belongs in the minors.

9. Minnesota Twins. They lost Torii Hunter and Johan Santana, yet they lead the AL Central. If they can get rid of Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau, they’ll run away with this thing.

10. New York Mets. Thirty-two runs in their past three games? Where’d that come from?

I have been an A's fan for over 40+ years, but cannot agree with your lofty ranking of the team. I take into account home ballparks, road records and conference record. Here is how I see things:

  1. Arizona - Yeah 3-7 this last week, but still strong.
  2. Tampa Bay - 16-11 in the East makes them the top.
  3. Florida - hot team in more than one way.
  4. Cubs - Friendly confines of Wrigley field
  5. Oakland - Pitching, and Emil Brown hitting.
  6. St. Louis - Pujols!
  7. Boston - Manny's unhappy, ballpark advantage.
  8. Dodgers - bad week.
  9. Angels - Waiting around for pitching to kick in.
  10. Houston - 9-1 week. Welcome to the top 10.

A's could have been higher, but if you can't do better than 2-4 versus Texas. Anything better than 3-3 against Indians and Braves will raise their stock.

Cleveland's pitching is shutting down the A's, moves Cleveland up the list and the A's down. Hopefully the bats will come alive before this road trip is over. I'm still looking for Frank Thomas to start picking up his share of power, but we won't see much of him in Atlanta. No DL.
