Once I select my club, I try to think about nothing at all. I sometimes get stupid thou ghts in there while standing over the ball, like "don't go left" or "damn, that beer cart lady was cute". Sometimes, I close my eyes and breathe deeply to clear out the intruders rather than step back and start over.
I just focus on the target and try to make sure I'm aligned properly. I agree with Jack's method of focusing on a spot some three feet or so in front of the ball to help with alignment. Sometimes I forget. Funny thing: I don't remember the last time I missed left because of misalignment. I'm a rightie.
When I'm putting, same thing. Think about nothing other than focusing on the line and speed required to get the ball in the hole.
The range is where you think about swing thoughts. On the course, you think about getting the ball on the fairway, then getting the ball on the green, then getting the ball in the hole.
I NEVER think about work. Don't have to worry about that part when I'm playing.
