Not much will come of this - unless there is a nexus between USC and the person to pay Mayo. I also disagree that it's the institutions responsibility to make sure these things won't happen. They can tell them the rules, what happens when they violate the rules, and not to break the rules but when the athletes leave the premises (as adults), they can make whatever decision they want. Anybody here going to turn down 300K b/c it violates NCAA rules?
I for one think every athlete should be paid (kind of like work study) for their commitment to the athletics (not a gross sum of money - just something where these people can support themselves). Every athlete should be paid the same. If we did this, I wouldn't feel bad burying a guy who takes money. Cases like the player who got suspended b/c he received a free suit for his mom's funeral make me sick. It's no wonder why these guys don't feel remotely bad taking anything.
