I think  that even though Sean Gallgher was pulled out early in today's game he still limited the Diamondbacks, a very strong offensive and defensive and all around great to two runs. (I think someone might need to edit that.) One can only hope that this guy comes in handy for the Cubs, and will be a good replacement for Rich Hill, whom was sent to the minors.

Sean Gallagher looked great today, all things considered.  I dont think he will replace Rich Hill, as I think Hill will come back sucessfully after he figures out his mechanics.  I would like to see him stay in the rotation until Hill returns, then, if he is still pitching well, maybe we can trade away Jason Marquis, and have him take that spot in the rotation before Jason's annual second half melt down.

I think Hill is a priority to get straightened out.  But, until that occurs, it supports the acquisition of Lieber as well as the retention of Marquis.  The Cubs have pitching depth and Lou has options.  It is no secret that Gallagher, Hart, Marshall,  Veal and even the disabled Guzman are talented assets to either fill the back end of the rotation in the future or as trading chips.

For now, the rotation is Z, Dempster, Lilly, Leiber, and Marquis.  If the latter 2 continue to struggle, then perhaps the promotions will be made from one of that group.  None of these young guys with the possible exception of Hill, are so talented, that you have to rush them.  I'm in favor of riding the veterans, unless they show they can no longer do it.  It appears that Lou Piniella is thinking the same way.

my prediction:

Lieber has a decent outing and remains in Hill's spot until Hill gets everything straitened out... Marquis is on a short leash and next time he implodes, Gallegher gets the call.

Rotation come mid-season:

Zambrano
Lilly
Dempster
Hill
Gallegher

LR: Lieber

As for Marquis, I'm not good with how all the contract stuff works... I think he's untradeable... if we cut him, would we jsut have to pay the rest of this years contract or the rest of the entire contract?  not giving up on the guy or anything like that but i think he's the worst out of the possible 7 starting pitchers.

A note to ye gentlemen as I seem to be Rich Hill's biggest fan nowadays & watch his progress down on the farm. this is from todays game vs Portland (San Diego's AAA)

5 2/3 inn
3 hits
4 walks
8 k's
ZERO runs
WIN!!!

he was taken out as part of a big substitution that took place after a delay involving 2 ejections.

looks to me like he is sorting things out! the walks were scattered with 2 of them coming in the 3rd where he also struck out the other 3 batters he faced.

I would be surprised to see him make a 3rd start down there especially with the rotation pushed back a day

will i am, i support you 100%.  Rich Hill is still the pitcher he wasa last year he just needs to get it together.  Sean Gallagher is a solid prospect but is clearly not ready.  he pitched his best major league game to date today but he got into trouble and couldnt get out of it.  he will be there in the future if we keep him around but he is not the answer this season for the Cubs.  if these guys continue to struggle look for Sean Marshall to step in.  he was sent down to stretch out for the rotation and i would guess he is your #1 alternate behind hill as of right now.

i agree with jazzman in that if Angel Guzman ever gets healthy he will be a major part of our future team.  donnie veal is having trouble returning to the form he possessed in 2006.  we have a lot of young guys who could really come around to fill in our rotation.  sean gallagher is no exception.  i have never been a big supporter of his by any means but i saw some improvement today for sure.

that 4 walks is still discouraging... but i know in his first AAA start before this one he only had 1 walk in 5 IP

good to see he's doing okay down there... i'd like to see him go another inning tho with 1 or 2 less walks.
