As many of you may have seen from the offseason till today, i've spent a lot of time talking up this bullpen and backing them up when they faulter.  Well, I think it's safe to say that i'm the one who is in position to puff up my chest and be proud of these guys.  I took a lot of flack on the main boards about this bullpen but it might be time to bring these talks back up.

After last night's game against the Cardinals, the Brewers' bullpen have put together 12 straight scoreless innings and counting heading into Saturday's game.  Also, despite the 4 runs allowed (2 by Gagne, 2 by Stetter) against the Astros in that extra-inning loss, the Brewers' bullpen has allowed just 5 total runs in 26 innings this month.  That's good enough for a 1.73 ERA for the month of May.

We all know now that the Brewers may be in some deep trouble in terms of the rotation but if the offense can use last night's big win as a platform and start playing up to their potential and the bullpen can continue to be dominant, the starters and their poor outings can easily be overcome as long as the deficit isn't too far out of hand.

Citron,

I'll give you credit on that one.  I've read a few of your posts regarding the bullpen.  I've been mocked myself for my backing of the bullpen.  Before the year started, I made the statement "there's a good chance our bullpen will finish with a lower ERA than our starting rotation".  Of course, I wasn't factoring in Turnbow and Gagnes troubles, and I thought Mota would be a touch better than he has been, but all and all, these guys are making me look good.  Now we just gotta keep it up.

You thought Guillermo Mota, with his 2007 ERA of 5.76, would be better than a 2.25 ERA? I admire your faith.

You spoke too soon with Eric Gagne coming in again tonight.  That guy probably can't close his garage door.

What a toolshed.

its a sad sad day.  I too was talking about the bullpen at the bar tonight.  I told everyone that it was a 1.80 era in may.  I guess I was wrong. Of course I was just guessing.

Don, are you expecting to find allies here or do you just enjoy fighting an uphill battle?

But it's not an argument at all. It's just an attempt to come on our board and antagonize our fans, largely resulting in you getting ignored.

Really classy there don, kicking a team when they're at their lowest point.  If we're gonna talk about chest pounding, would you like to discuss your thoughts on Rich Hill this season?  I believe you said that he would be even better than last season and could be the #1 starter on many other teams.  How's that workin' out for ya?

You truly are a jackass.

Hmm...if you don't want to be mocked when you're wrong...you might want to refrain from the "The Bullpen has been great all month (9 days)...I was right...let me gloat about it"

And I doubt you want to get in a battle of who was wrong the most with their predictions this offseason....i think i'd come out on top with that one.

Whatever you have to tell yourself to justify your actions here.  I really find it as no surprise, considering the individual we're dealing with here, that 40 games into a season, you find it appropriate to kick a team when they're at their lowest point.

I also find it humorous that you come out of the woodwork to bad mouth us after the Cubs finally win their first series in their last 5 tries.  Where was this smack talk after the Nationals series, or the Brewers series (1st or 2nd time), or the Cardinals or Reds series?  You protest up and down that you're not the 'usual Cubs fan' and that you have class when it comes to all things baseball but then you pull crap like this.  Don't get me wrong, I give the Cubs kudos for sweeping the Diamondbacks, but once again, the Brewers have played the fewest home games in all of baseball yet the Cubs are just 4 games ahead.

Guess what don, the Cubs were 8 games back at this time last season and you love to remind us time and time again how that one turned out.

I'll be sure to search out for you when the Cubs struggle and generously return the favor.

Wow I'd hate to see you if I actually do kick you when your down, because if you think that one comment is anything, you ain't seen nothin yet.

Oh and you seem to be under the impression this is a "Cubs are winning, Brewers are losing haha" thing...it's not. It's a you and me thing...and after all the intense arguements over the winter, do you really think I'm going to miss an oppurtunity to mock you after you boast about a little bit of success? I wouldn't make that comment if it was just some random brewer fan, but because it was you i did.

So are you implying that this bullpen is entirely garbage because Gagne can't close a game?

I do believe in the offseason when I said that I thought the Brewers would be a 'top 5 bullpen' if Turnbow could find the strike zone and if Gagne could regain some form.  In fact, I'd be willing to bet that I could go back and find those exact words of mine if I thought it was necessary to bring the thread back up.  As we know, Turnbow was awful and has found himself a minor leaguer and Gagne isn't holding up his end of what I thought he could do.

I'm pretty sure I remember you and plenty of others saying that Mota, Torres, McClung and Riske were all going to be garbage and that this bullpen would be real bad because of it.  That hasn't been the case at all.

So take solace in the fact that your beloved find themselves atop the division after playing a majority of their games at home, a mere 37 games into the season and unable to defeat the Cardinals or Brewers.  Like I said, i'll be more than happy to return the favor to you and your brethren when the time comes.
