Affliction still has a few tests to pass for official go-ahead

Making news this week with a switch of venue from Dallas to Anaheim, Calif., the Affliction-branded July 19 event appears to have a nearly complete lineup ready for approval by the California State Athletic Commission.

In addition to the previously announced heavyweight clash between Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia, Affliction vice president Tom Atencio told SI.com on Thursday that the pay-per-view portion would feature bouts between Pedro Rizzo and Josh Barnett; Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Mike Whitehead; and either Matt Lindland's against Fabio Negao, or Ben Rothwell's versus an undetermined opponent.(Rumors have Rothwell fighting former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, but Atencio, without giving names, said there were a couple options available.)

The evening's undercard, which Affliction said was being negotiated for broadcast on live TV, looks competitive, too. Savant Young, who moved down to 145 pounds, faces striker Mark Hominick; Ray Lamaza takes on Justin Levens; J.J. Ambrose fights undefeated Patrick Speight; and Brett Cooper is set to challenge veteran Mike Pyle.

However, the company's first effort, dubbed "Banned" after Zuffa, owner of the UFC and WEC, and ProElite (EliteXC) stopped fighters from wearing the clothes as a reaction to Affliction's plans as a promoter, is by no means secure in the eyes of the state athletic commission.

"Hopefully I can put everybody in the same room together really, really soon," said CSAC executive officer Armando Garcia. "I've been down this road this before."

With Affliction wanting to attach itself to the license of Southern California club boxing and MMA promoter Roy Engelbrecht, Garcia said there are numerous steps to be taken before the company could officially announce a venue or begin ticket sales.

After a similar situation arose when Fight Entertainment Group held an event at the Los Angeles Coliseum last June, Garcia now requires a bond that covers twice the fighters' costs. Though Atencio denied rumors of a $6 million fight purse (he claims that Emelianenko's reported $1.5 million and Sylvia's $800,000 are inflated by public discussion), he said Affliction would have no issue covering the bond.

Aside from promoter/regulatory body issues, part of the licensing process requires that both Sylvia and Barnett, former UFC heavyweight champions who tested positive for steroids during their time at the top, provide urine samples under CSAC supervision.

Affliction, a 3-year-old clothing manufacturer that initially targeted the tattoo and music crowd, threw itself into MMA in 2006 and 2007, aligning with some of the biggest names in the sport in an effort to gain awareness amongst a new audience.

MMA has been "unbelievably important" to Affliction's growth, said Atencio. The company's role in the industry was clouded, though, when it brought together Randy Couture, who is in the midst of a legal battle over his contract with UFC, and Emelianenko, the sport's best heavyweight, who, at the end of 2007, refused to sign with the UFC. The two had fans buzzing with their pre-fight-like photo.

If Affliction can get past the licensing issues with the CSAC this card could very well be the most star studded non UFC card in US history.

If it does play out like many are saying . . .

Fedor vs. Sylvia

Arvloski vs. Rothwell

Barnett vs. Rizzo

(In just those 3 fights you have 5 of what many would consider the 10 best heavyweights in th world, and Rizzo is a legend if no longer at the top of hus game.)

You add to that two big name fighters like Lindland and Sobral and what a debut event you have!!!

But here is the problem:  outside of hardcore MMA fans this card doesn't have a mass appeal, I hate to say it but EliteXC CBS debut card will get way more publicity and discussion from many people here in America.

And that is sad.

All I'm thinking is if they have enough fighters to come with good cards every time?!?!?

If they are succesful from a comercial perspective with this card, I believe they will be fine.

Just from seeing this card they must have some good MMA people working for them, and I believe they will be smart enough to understand early on its not about quantity of card, but quality.

In all honesty if they just had one more card later this year they'd be able to have some of these same fighters on it as well.

Heck the depth of their heavyweight division already rivals the UFC.  And don't forget this is the likely organization to put on the potential match-up between Fedor and Couture!!!

Also most orgs outside of the UFC aren't having exclusive contracts anymore.

I doubt seriously Arlovski is going to Affliction, there is nothing out there pointing to it.

So that leaves as its only good fight Fedor and Sylvia, and that is only to see Sylvia get worked hard by Fedor.

Rizzo is no longer top of the game, his match up would have been great 6 years ago, not now.

Their depth is a deck of cards, no substance to it, and Affliction does not have any long term rights to Fedor, so after this card he may never fight for them again. Same with Barnett. The cost of the venue, and unsecured fighters, make this one company that is at risk to be a fly by night corporation.

Some very good points RangerLee,

Things could just as easily go wrong as they could go right for Affliction.  They are jumping in with both feet that is definitely true.

They are putting this card on in 20,000 seat arena, thy have no generally well known fighter to non hard core MMA fans in America.

But let me deal with some of your concerns from the Affliction side of it.

Andre Arloski:  there is nothing definite about where Arvloski will end up next.   The Affliction representative who was part of the panel last Friday on InsideMMA, did not shoot down the rumors of Arvloski when asked about them by co-host Kenny Rice.  But rather says they are in negotiations (which is just as much as any UFC connection at this point.  Also there suggestion was made and concurred with that Arvloski vs Rothwell would be a good fight.  So what I am saying is there is as much pointing to Affliction as there is to the UFC and that is more than can be said about any other company at present.

Also I believe Arvloski is a major key to this particular card because he is as well known in America as any of these other fighters.

Fedor:  you mention long term rights to Fedor:  I believe Fedor wants to fight the best competition out there but did not want to be restricted by the UFC.  Affliction has a long standing relationship with Randy Couture and the publicity shots from a few months back were for Affliction.  Commonly accepted in MMA circles is that of the potential opponents out there currently for Fedor that Josh Barnett is top one.  Also the potential winner of a possible matchup with Arvloski and Rothwell is a legitimate contender.  This is also a great way to get Fedor more recognized to the American public.

Costs:  obviously this is a major financial undertaking for the company but the cross promotion with the clothing line is a benefit, and it is a basic principal to make money you need to spend money.  I believe the decision to have this card at The Honda Center in Anaheim is a good one because Orange County is as much a MMA hot bed as anywhere in the country.  If they are gonna fill an arena that size there isn't anywhere better to hold this card in my opinion.

It will definitely be interesting to see how this all plays out.
