so, how crazy would it be to sign the recently released Jim Edmonds, put him on the dl for a month or so, and then bring him on board if bourn is still batting below the mendoza line mid-june? it could buy us a playoff-experienced cf for a year while bourn adjusts to the majors, plus bpurn could still pinch-run, be a defensive sub, etc. is this a crazy idea or what? any chance edmonds might go for a deal like that?

I actually like that idea... Hopefully it won't come to that. Bourn aughta pull his average up fifty or sixty points by then. But if he still has anything left and he's not too expensive, it's an interesting idea. Especially if there aren't any pitchers available at the break.

I gotta say "NO." Not just cause I can't stand him, but he's always been overrated defensively, making highlite reel catches on balls other CFs would get to without having to dive. Now he can't even hit his weight. With Cruz Jr and Erstad, Houston has their fill of over-the-hill outfielders.
Even Jacques Jones would be a better option, but PLEASE, no Edmonds!

This would be a brilliant idea if Edmonds wasn't hitting below the mendoza line and makes Carlos Lee look like a speed demon. Give me a brake. Erstad would be a much better choice.

okay, i hear y'all. i was under the impression that edmonds had been doing poorly because he was playing through an injury, and that maybe with a few weeks to heal he might be able to hit some again.
it just hurts a bit having two everyday starters batting below .200. geez, maybe our pitchers could bat 8th, well at least oswalt, chacon and backe...

What a fascinating idea... but as Nash alluded to, I think we'd be best served picking up a starting pitcher around the break if we can snag a good one via free agency or trade.
Also, in terms of "if you could have just about anyone in CF" fantasising... and by "just about," I mean forget about your Beltrans and so forth...
I'd rather we somehow traded to get Willy T back or could somehow steal Crawford. FANTASY.... FTW!

I think Jim Edmonds playing how he is right now would be much better then Jose Cruz Jr. Pretty soon they're going to create the Cruz line for batting that low.

I'm with the "no edmonds" group. I don't like bailing on the rookie, he can fly. If he stays below 200, I'd like to see them move Pence to the 1 slot or kaz to 1 & pence to 2, move Bourne down till he gets his groove on. Once he can keep his average in the 270's or higher, he'll be one of the deadliest leadoff men in the game.

i disagree - Pedroia hit sub-.200 until May 15th of last year and still was the rookie of the year. Patience is going to be key with Bourn - we still have to play him every day or else we could ruin him.

I would totally be up for Kazuo 1, Pence 2.... the thought of an on-fire Pence inserted INTO that Matsui-BLT lineup... instead of behind it... makes me drool.
But I don't want to see anything change unless (and until) we go into a bit of a slump as a team, lose a few games in a row to not-exactly-prime-competition and all. For now, it ain't broke, so don't fix it.
Did you SEE the 8th inning today? Matsui-BLT-Pence... amazing.
I can't remember if it was the TV or radio guys, but someone called Pence the "Pickle" to go with our beloved BLT. And not just any pickle... a HUGE meal-in-itself pickle. Big ol' deli one. Heh.
