I don't buy that Joe, not to mention if the Yanks are doing bad there fans turn to "but we have the most championships"
I am a Cowboy fan to sooooo I won't rag to hard but let me guess your fav. hockey team is the Canadians and Basketball Celtics so you can use the above quote for any sport
Here's the breakdown on my fandom.
Baseball- My earliest childhood memories were of rooting for the Mets (though I didnt know that hating the Yankees was required so I cheered for Reggie). Then they traded Seaver and Kingman. My older brother said we're now Yankee fans because the Mets don't care about their fans. I was 9, I said ok. In 81 I'll never forget how Barry Foote chased 3 pitches up the ladder, the last way so far over his head I thought it would hit the backstop. A few years later I watched as the town went crazy over the Mets. It started in 84, blossomed in 85 and was full bloom by 86. I hated the Mets, their fans and everything about them. Stayed true to the Yanks through Meacham, Smalley, Stankiewicz, Espinoza, Robertson (who never recovered from his car crash), Claudell, Griffey Sr, Gamble, Hassey, Wynegar and a decade where the biggest hope we had for the future of our rotation was Drabek and a 6-0 start by Hudson.
I waited over a decade to see any real chance of success but stayed loyal throughout.
Football- Similar deal. My Jets left Shea and I decided there were no NY teams. My best friend was a Cowboy fan so I joined him. At the time, Pittsburgh had more rings. Stayed true through Hogeboom and Pelleur and finally things came together when the USFL disbanded and Herschel left the Generals for Dallas, only to be converted in 10 picks. Russel Maryland was unsung, but more important to Dallas than Irvin.
Hockey- Islanders. Caught the end of the run on the Drive for 5 and I still can't figure out why we havent had anybody decent since Pat LaFontaine. The one rush I have had in 2 and a half decades was a quadruple OT playoff win over the Caps. (Lost most of my interest when the Europeans came in)
Basketall- Knicks. Ugh. HATE the Bulls. (Lost most of my interest when the Europeans came in.)
College Football- Nebraska. First college game I caught was the Orange Bowl. Huskers v. Canes. Huskers scored a TD with no time left to make it 31-30. Mike Rozier was running crazy. Turner Gil ran the option on every other play. (First time I ever saw it and it took me 3 years to figure out why the NFL never uses it). I loved the fact that Osborne went for the 2 instead of kicking the XP and locking up the vote. Pass intended for Irving Fryer was swatted away and I was a Husker fan ever since.
College Basketball- I loved Mullin and Wennington on the Redmen. Hated the f$%^%ing politically correct name change to Red Storm. I really only became a KU fan because of my love for the Yankees. 6 Wildcat titles-each time the Yanks won the WS.
I know that my teams are "popular" and I was once before accused on these boards of fair weather-dom based on my Yankee/Ca-boy affinity. All I can say is this, it's hard to label me a fair weather fan, when I havent seen a ring-title or anything in 7 years.
