Now that the draft is over and things are beginning to settle down, let's take a minute to look again at the Steeler's draft. Like a lot of people, I was thinking O-line, D-end, and cover corner were priorities this year. Like a lot of people, I was surprised at the guys the Steelers took in the draft.
Having read the comments from Coach and Kevin Colbert and taking a second look at the team status, what do you think about the draft now?
Mendenhall (RB) - Who can argue with the logic that he is a force with the ball? Fast Willie is recovering from a broken leg, and there was no starter behind him to finish the season last year. Competition is great for this team, and two quality starters could make the Steelers the best running team in the league next season, which will protect the quarterback better than a great O-lineman would.
Sweed (WR) - Another offensive weapon to get the ball out of Ben's hands quickly, limiting the need for max protection. A great value.
Davis (DE) - I haven't seen a lot on this kid, but if he can make the transition to LB like they expect, he should be a good addition. They did lack depth at LB last season, and now there is a group of good young talent to develop over the next 3-4 years. The Steelers lost games on defense, not on offensive production.
Hills (OT) - Apparently this was a value pick, and the Steelers are as good as anybody at finding quality men in the middle of the draft. If he becomes a reliable backup this was a good pick.
Dixon (QB) - IF he is as talented as he seems, maybe he'll be Ben's backup next season. He really needs to put on some weight though, he just looks too fragile for the NFL.
Humpal (LB) - I haven't seen this guy either, but if depth at LB is critical to the success of this team (and it is), you can't fault this pick.
Mundy (S) - I hope this guy works out. Troy Polamalu still isn't healthy, and that worries me. If Mundy can develop into a #2 safety, this is a fantastic pick. If not, it could be a long year.
So, looking back I can understand these picks. I would not have approached the draft this way, but if I knew everything I would be a personnel director for an NFL team, right?
