I need help everyone. I have been a Mark Martin fan since I was a kid. I watched him race as a 14 year old at the Benton Speedbowl (now I-30 speedway). He would bring in his latemodel and school the vets way back then! Since MM runs a limited schedule, I have a hard time watching the races that he does not run in because I have no rooting interest. I liked Richard Petty before MM joined the Winston Cup way back in the day and have tried to pull for the 43 car for sentimental reasons but Petty's cars just seem to lack the strength to win a race. So the question is, who should I root for and why? Mark will be retiring soon and I need a driver to follow to make the races more interesting! Thanks for your input!

RazorbackG, before we can really answer that we need you to answer a few questions.
- What type of driver do you like, Firey, laid back, not afraid to shove or one that races clean and will back out before they go for the win.
- Do you want to go with the crowd?
- Do you want a driver that will upset a crowd?
- Is there a particular make that you prefer?
When you answer these question, we, at least I can lead you to a driver that best fits what you like. Other wise you will get people saying Dale Earnhardt Jr. ( to go with the crowd) or Kyle Bush ( because he is now the BAD BOY of the sport,) or Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, you know the popular drivers.
Looking forward to seeing your response so I can try to match you to a driver and I will give you a reason why you should keep an eye on that driver too.

You should root for Juan Pablo Montoya. When you liked Mark Martin early his number was 6 and JPM is 4+2 = 6. And going by initials - you like MM, while the middle of J and P is M - so you have M M. Plus he always delivers with action. And Martin used to drive a FORD which is a F*^kin Old Rebuilt Dodge - so go with a Dodge and the #42 Juan Pablo Montoya.

I say Jimmie Johnson or Denny Hamlin. I know johnson is a popular choice due to his success but he still really young in the sport and both him and Hamlin will be around for a long time to come.

Mikeyfan1599 here are my answers, thanks for taking the time to help out....
1. One that races clean but can be competitive
2. Don't have to go with the crowd
3. don't like jerks but sometimes the crowd can be wrong
4. Not really
Thanks for your help!

Frady, if I had to choose between the two I would go with Hamlin.

RazorbackG I would list the following drivers as I think they meet your crediantials the best.
1. Carl Edwards - Races hard but hasn't really shown a mean streak on the track. Always has a smile and willing to talk to anyone.
2. Matt Kenseth - you could say he is almost a Mark Martin Clone, but with a slight mean streak. (reason he's won a championship and Mark Didn't)
3. Ryan Newman - Smooth Driver, Great Qualifier races hard but gets into trouble because of that at times. Could use better equipment, if he goes to RCR watch out he could dominate
4. Denny Hamlin - Has a temper but a smooth young driver.
5. Jeff Burton - Another MM Clone, very consistent
Of course you could always go witht he crowd and go with Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Mikey.......

Who is this Carl Edwards fellow you are referring to? There is one in Cup racing right now that is being marketed the way you describe, but I think we know that image and reality aren't necessarily the same. Of course, I might be wrong....why don't we ask Kenseth or Biffle what they think, they know him better than I do? Oh, wait, I think they already did that didn't they?
I will totally agree with your #5 choice though. When I saw the criteria that RazorbackG gave, Jeff Burton seemed pretty obvious to me.
