Reading through some of these threads, I see that the OVERLYING theme of the past two weeks has been cut Cedric Benson like "yesterday!" However, when I was reading this article by Brad Biggs the other day, I noticed it might not be as easy as one may think.
Benson’s salary-cap figure for 2008 is $3.335 million and if the Bears cut him before June 1 and do not exercise an option to spread the dead money over two seasons, the hit for this year would be roughly $6 million. That would be cutting a sizeable slice into the pie that’s meant to go to Tommie Harris, Devin Hester, Robbie Gould and others in the form of longterm extensions.
If the Bears did a post-June 1 cut, or cut him now and had the money go on the books as a post-June 1 cut, they would still be on the books for more than $2.5 million this season when subtracting out his base pay of $820,000 for 2008.
Ay Carumba!
Biggs goes on to say that even if the Bears release Benson based on his injuries, he would likely file a grievance and win, resulting in effectively paying Benson his salary without him even being on the team.
All that to say... ALthough Forte WILL be the guy next season, we might have to sit on Benson one more year.

I don't think keeping Benson is actually all that bad - if he's healthy. Obviously he can't handle the load as the #1 RB but splitting time with Forte might good thing. It would for one - allow Forte time to learn and adjust to the speed of the NFL as well as I think Benson in the role he played when Jones was on the Bears was a good thing. He ran with a bit of a "cip on his shoulder" and actually looked to punish the on coming tackler instead of just falling down or running out of bounds. Yes he still ended up hurt but I think we all can agree that Benson coming of the bench after they chase Forte around for 2 or 3 drives might be a good thing - as it was with Benson and Jones. So I say not to cut him but to make it an open competition but either way make sure both backs (and Wolfe) are involved with the offense just having the better of the two or three if you want to say get the most reps! Who knows maybe this kick in the a$$ for Benson will get him going and he will finally become worth of that #4 pick and all that money

great find Marine ... notice when the financial situations are revealed .... no matter how bad the situation might be, there is always second or even third thoughts
Like I said on another thread, its a messy divorce with no real amicable split, at least for next season. Why not use Benson, extra body and throw him in there to take some punishment ... he has the most to loose as a player if he doesn't perform. OK you don't necessarily want to be with the Bears, but the only way other teams are going to even look at you is if you play hard or literally - reinvent yourself - a la Jerome Bettis from the Rams to the Steelers.
I'd rather get a return in a investment in 6 Mil (while minimal) rather than throwing it out the window

i am telling you guys, whether he is cut or not, he is not recovering from his injury and probably won't be playing with the Bears next season anyway..My guess, if those figures are right, is Bears place him on IR..he has an injury that is already very hard for a RB to recover from and Benson has a horrible work ethic which he has proven every year with the Bears, so if an injury is hard to recover from from a normal athlete, it will be 10 times harder for someone like Benson
great find though ChicagoMarine..I would love him to be cut, but i still stand by my placing him on IR this year, saving his salary amount in our cap to use for emergencies or another backup RB..

Maybe not, if they decide to keep him they could simply put him on IR, or if he passes the teams physical and the Bears cut him based on performance then I doubt he would have (2) ankles to stand as far as an injury settlement goes.
When players get hurt then cut, they do have a legit greivane but if they clear medicaly and are cut anyway, it's kinda S.O.L. for the player since NFL contracts are not gauranteed.
If the Bears were smart, the would let him report to camp and let Forte win the job, Ced couldn't participate fully in camp if he fails his physical so if he happens to pass the physical then it's still no biggie, let him compete and if forte winds out we just cut Ced and move on with the 2.5 mill cap hit. If he fails then he lands on IR so we don't waste a roster spot. either way, if Benson underperforms again this year we are screwed with carrying his dead money contract........might as well save the roster spot for a younger player to groom.

i heard the other day on the score that if the Bears put him on IR that they wont take a huge hit like they would if thjey cut him, he would get the money owed to him for the season but it wouldn't count against them for this years salary cap, not sure if that is exactly how it works but that is how they made it sopund because they were saying that it would give them more money this year to give to guys like Tommie Harris and Devin Hester. hopefully i understood them correctly and this is something that they would consider doing because ive also heard that his ankle is not heeling like they thought it would.

Who's to say Benson won't be better with a line. Our offense sucked last year because we couldn't block anybody. Run or Pass. Benson was an asset to Bears when T.J was still here. Remember they both had 6 rushing TD's in 06 with Jones getting the bulk of the carries. Who are you gonna pay where our cap isn't crushed and is an upgrade over Benson? My only concern about his play really is is health. How do we know that his ankle isn't healing properly? Is there smoke being blown here, rumors, or is this coming from a reliable source?
