Not bad. Let's all thank the schedule makers for giving us four against the Royals after a really tough stretch of games. If we can walk out of KC with a four game sweep, this road stretch wouldn't look that bad overall. A four game sweep would put us at 9-10 since April 22, with 16 out of 19 on the road. I think all of us agreed .500 would be a decent goal going into this road stretch, and two more wins against KC would just about get us there. Let's see if Olson and Burres can do it.

some replies to the posts I missed yesterday:

What I want to see for proof that Daniel Cabrera is definitely for real now is one bad start.  I want to see how he follows that up.  If he gives up five or six one night, but then has two or three great ones after it, I'll be 100% confident that he's here.  If, however, a bad start jolts his confidence and he regresses, I'll wonder if he can ever put together a full season of success.  The way he's going, I expect the former, but I still want to be cautious in how much I hope for from him.  I definitely am excited to watch every time he gets the ball now.

I want Huff to stay and be our 4 or 5 hitter, maybe 6 if we manage to land two awesome bats in the next couple of years.  I mean, like everyone we should listen to offers but I think we've got a core close enough to contention that we should only be selling the "right" guys.  Huff isn't that old, and we haven't had a real DH in a while.

Nice game tonight.  As I've said before, I think Trachsel should stay on the team even if he's going to be terrible more often than not.  I think we just can't afford to throw another young gun into a permanent starting role until after the All-Star break.  If Trachsel strings together a few like last night we might even be able to grab a prospect or two for him at the deadline again.

Sweep?  It's definitely a possibility at this point, but I'd guess we lose one.  Taking 3 of 4 would leave us at .500, and we'd be finished with what I think is the roughest stretch all year.  I know we didn't play the heavyweights, but 20 days with no rest, 17 road games, two West Coast trips, losing two hours twice, 3 extra-inning games and a doubleheader.  I don't care who you play, that's brutal.  The suspended game also hurt, and we SUCK against Oakland.

I'm only moderately encouraged by our success against KC, because as I've noted before we kill them, and have since at least 2001.  I can't find head-to-head stats from before then, anyone know where I can look?

Sweep?  Did somebody say sweep

I don't know about that, I'm just happy to get 2 wins for now.

I must say, even with all of the losses as of late [until KC], I believe we are showing much progress in the Pitching Deptartment.  Now lets continue with the Bats.  I like seeing Freddie Bynum back in the lineup.  Maybe we can regain our confidence a bit in Kansas City and possibly discuss the S word.

Optimism, gentlemen. Optimism.

But at the same time, KC is one of the worst teams in the league. If we want to be a .500 or near .500 team, you gotta beat the teams on the bottom. Especially after getting smoked in three straight series against the teams at the top.

We ought to take at least 3 in this series. A sweep would be nice.

That post that Sess left about "Well a half of change of pace" that was hilarious. I am so happy that the Rays are up there instead of the Yanks.

I just heard that the Yanks might bring back David Wells???

I hate them. I hope this makes them ten time worse.

Hope we take the third one tonight. Go O'S!!!!!!!!

Man it's great to see Jonathan Papelbon blow 2 saves in 2 consecutive nights. I hate the Red Sox so much there pain and misery just brighten up my day and make me feel so much better about myself :).

Onto the Orioles

Man we just flat out own the Royals this is starting to get ridiculous I am really bummed i missed that game danny threw i wish i could of seen it. It's great to see Daniel Cabrera finally start to blossom and show how good his stuff is. Oh and Onthemove you can be scared of rick krantiz all you want but the guy is already doing a hell of a lot better than leo "worthless" mazzone you can see that in the confidence exuded by DC and garret olson.

GO O'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Pop;

Let me get one thing straight with the Kranitz thing. The Florida sports media was all over the way he handled the pitchers last year. Dontrelle Willis, Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez and others were often left in the game too long (a comment that continued right here on this forum on more than a few occassions when Orioles pitchers were left in after surpassing the 100 pitch count and looked gassed). Even Dontrelle will tell you that the Marlins pitchers were always prepared and that Rick could relate to the youngsters. But Florida ran him out of town after his second year because the pitching staff and the DL had all the same names on it. Two of them, Sanchez and Johnson, haven't made it back yet! If Baltimore can harness his ability to teach and rapport with the young arms, while ensuring that he too learn the REAL nuances of a pitching coach (like knowing when to say when), then it may work. I lived the rollercoaster ride the last 2 years down here in Florida. In 2006 he was the next great pitching coach. In 2007 he was the coach who killed arms. His team pitching finished last in baseball in 2007. Now in 2008, the O's fans think he's a Godsend. I hope it works for everyone's sake. But I wouldn't count on it!

You can read what you want into anything. As far as Daniel Cabrera is concerned, is it Kranitz or is Cabrera a fifth year pro entering his prime and is now "getting it." Who gets blamed for Adam Loewen's issues? Was he brought back to fast? What role does Kranitz play in that? Did Rick try to speed up Steve Trachsel? Is that why he is pitching poorly? Or is Steve just old and done? How about Greg Aquino? Or Randor Bierd who found himself on the DL with Loewen? Trachsel, Aquino, Bierd and Loewen are negatives. Cabrera is a positive. Garrett Olson and Jim R. Johnson are next. When all is said and done, the answer will lie in the improvement or decline of the staff as a whole. The number of bum arms will tell the rest of the story. For references, see the 2006 and 2007 Florida Marlins.

Damn, I keep forgetting you are in Florida OTM. We can only hope that he learned from his mistakes. The upside of having Kranitz around is obvious, so let's hope it is successful. Guthrie and Cabrera have both been mentioned as injury risks this year and btw, it was Kranitz who convinced Cabrera to use his sinking fastball more often and we have all seen the success that has brought him. As a matter of fact, it has been one of the major reasons that DC has done well. Throw in the off-speed pitches and you have a completely new pitcher. Olson, Johnson, Sarfate and Albers are pluses.

Also, Aquino wasn't really overused. The thing with Trachsel is that I believe it was Trembley who said in the media that Trax needed to speed up because it made it easier for the defense to stay on their toes. Trembley has also said that whether or not a pitcher comes out or stays in depends on how the pitcher is doing and how he looks out there. Is he laboring or does he look relaxed? I tend to think that Trembley has the last word on taking pitchers out as he seems to have a game plan when it comes to this stuff. Is it really the pitching coach that tells the manager when to take him out or what?

Only time will tell and let's hope it tells a story about success and not bum arms.
