Three players were in the mix in 2007 when Ruben Brown went down: Terrance Metcalf, Josh Beekman, and backup tackle John St. Clair. Metcalf, despite years of grooming, did nothing, Lovie didn't give Beekman a chance, and St. Clair is a veteran journeyman.

This year we'll start a rookie at LT, and he'll need solid play on his right. So what's the answer? Is it one of those guys, or are there other options?

I think 5 or even more guys are in the mix for that position:

Front runners are John St. Clair, Josh Beekman, then there are guys like Terrence Metcalf and rookie Kirk Barton, and after them guys like Anthony Oakley, Tyler Reed and another rookie Chester Adams.

I also think that Terrence Metcalf might get cut this offseason, because he didn't show any worth to the team.

And my favorite for the guard position is Kirk Barton, rookie who was LT in the college, but has good size and strength to be very good NFL guard or RT, but John St. Clair will probably win this LG starting position battle, because Bears need someone more experienced at LG next to young rookie LT Chris Williams.

I have to agree with you Scyte

In the end the competition for LG will really boild coen to (2) players, Beekman and St.Claire and knowing Lovie, he will give the nod to St.Claire for (2) reasons.

(1)   he will be lined up next to a rookie LT and being a veteran OT himself, he can help out Williams much easier then a 2'nd year player with ZERO playing experience in the NFL....

(2)   St.Claire proved he play the LG position at a high level already when he was put in to save that sorry excuse fore an O-lineman in Terrance Metcalf.... broken hand or not he was given (2) opportunities to be a starter for the Bears the past five years and tanked both times, he will most likely be a roster cut since Angelo loves to secure spots for his draft picks.

Now, Beekman very well could challenge Garza at RG...  Garza has been average at best and "IF"  Beekman shows in training camp and pre-season that he can play then he might just bump Garza...

Lovie would have little concern about experince at RG since Kruetz and Tait would be  more then capable of helping Beekman out,  especially if  St.Claire is our LG.  Kruetz wouldn't need to assist St.Claire on the left side nearly as much so Kruetz would be able to watch Beekmans back a little more.....

To me that sounds like a win- win- win scenario. Williams immediately upgrades (2) positions since he will anchor the LT spot thus allowing Tait to go back to his natural RT position. So, instead of the former dead weght at LG and RT we insert new blood at LT and veteran blood at RT,  plus St.Claire would upgrade the LG position over the former one-armed Brown and if Beekman out performs Garza for the RG position we would end up upgrading their also, that means our much maligned O-line would be upgraded at (4) of (5) positions........

Unless someone really shows they're ready to step in during training camp, look for JA to pick up some veteran OG help when teams start trimming their rosters. After all the O linemen drafted. there'll definately be some serviceable veterans cut. While the Bears do have some intriging options, it wouldn't be a wise move to go into the season with a totally inexperienced left side of the line.

As far as i know Shane Olivea is still on the market.  If he is, i cant believe it.  He was the guy that helped LaDainian Tomlinson get his record breaking season.  On running downs (obvious ones) Olivea would go from RT to LG and stack the left side with two tackles.  Now granted, Marcus McNeil has developed into a great LT in a short time considering he wasnt even a first rounder.

Anyways, Olivea would give you depth at guard and tackle in case Chris Williams cant handle the left side John Tait can go back to the left side and John St. Clair could stay at guard or move to RT with Olivea at the other spot.
