Chrysler corporation is rolling out a program called "Let's Refuel America".  Running from May 7 to June 2, if you either purchase or lease a selected new vehicle (minivan, certain cars and Jeeps) you recieve a card that allows you to purchase gas at $2.99 per gallon for 3 years.  They put a limit on the amount of gallons based on their projected gasoline use for that time.  Compared to $4.00 per gallon (it is actually $5.00 per gallon right now on Beaver Island in Michigan) an average savings of $500.00 per year for fuel is what I figured for a minivan.  Does this entice the average American consumer to commit $25,000 for a new vehicle to save $1,500.00 on fuel over 3 years?  Interesting program, with the timing pretty good.

Does anyone know which of the hybrids are a fair deal for a good vehicle?  I know of a few people that have one put out by Toyota, and it seems to run around $300.00 per month to buy, and great mileage especially in city traffic.

Dam! I just bought a new dodge caliber! Oh well, I don't commute much, mostly long trips of at least 250 miles so the gas mileage is good.

I don't understand how the hybrid works- can anyone give me a quick overview?

...in simple terms....it combines electric and combustion power.......so that the car can run on an electric motor and save fuel...when the power cells run out...the combustion engine kicks in......

...here in cali...there is a big uproar about letting single occupant hybrids share the carpool lanes....

As i work in the industry let me explain. They get better economy in the city than on the highway ( which is opposite of most cars ). If you drive a lot at 35 mph and under get a hybrid. If like me you hop on the nine four and go 70 then you are better getting off getting a small four cylinder .The gas engine kicks in at 35 mph ( in most cases ) and you loose the value the hybrid is designed to offer. Watch how many miles you go also as most have an 80,000 warranty on the hybrid battery which costs about 8,000 to replace. So if you rack up the mileage at the rate of 15,000 to 20,000 per year just watch out. The other issue is they eat tires. The extra weight of the heavy magnets, motor etc at the front of the car is awful on the tires even if they get rotated correctly ( heavy weight on small tires = not good for tires ).Also don't fall the MPH on the sticker as if you want AC you will never get what is advertised.

Let's face it ... Chrysler is apparently only offering this on the gas guzzlers, so I guess it's a smart move on their part; I mean how else are they going to get people to buy these cars when gas is approaching $4.00 per gallon. But it is not a smart move for the consumer, at least not in my opinion. The fact they limit the number of gallons you can purchase and that it's only good for 3 years, I don't think that will offset the "cons" of buying one of these vehicles. Unless the purchaser is definitely planning to get rid of the vehicle at the end of three years (and who knows how easy it will be to sell a gas guzzler in 3 years if gas prices continue to rise, or what kind of trade-in you would get ... probably no where near what it's worth), it's probably not a good deal. If a person is going to have to get a large vehicle because of family needs or having to haul large loads, or whatever, I would do the research (Consumer Reports is a great place to start) and find the most fuel efficient vehicle available that fits the need, and then not go with the largest engine offered on the vehicle. Giving up a little power can save a lot of money when it comes to MPG. I think gas prices are finally forcing Americans to at least start thinking about fuel economy as a priority when looking for a new vehicle, instead of just getting the biggest and "baddest" thing available. It's not going to make a difference overnight since many people who bought the big gas guzzlers won't be able to afford to just get rid of the vehicle and get a new one, but eventually the improved MPG on cars will make a big difference in the amount of fuel consumed each year. I think people will also get used to the idea of using mass transit during the current crunch and may just decide to stick with that for commuting to and from work ... something many of us have been reluctant to do up to now.

Something funny......Not funny but very interesting!

Gas in Saudi Arabia 0.91 per gallon, Kuwait 0.78 per gallon! What a JOKE!
