With an offens thst should put up good numbers, how does everyone feel about Ike, Townsend, McFadden and William Gay holding down the leagues top wide-outs. I really Liked our draft, but I thought we needed a shut down corner. Is McFadden ready to take over and move Deshea to the nickel or are we going to be looking to see what veteran gets cut?

i think ike is as ready as hes gonna be, and hes a for sure starter for awhile. i like his game. townsend will get the number two corner position this year (dont know how much hes got left in the tank), but i think willie gay is prime for a good year and he could turn out to be a good number two corner...that said, you can never have too many good corners so we'll have to see how mcfadden and gay turn out.

We play Cincinatti twice a year and until this year there's no one in the league that had a better receiving corps! We're ready, especially if we can get a pass rush, which I'm expecting from last year top two picks, so opposing qbs don't have all day to throw.

old head I agree... our corners almost never get burnt, yet people always act as though we have a weak secondary. Anthony Smith gave up some big plays, but most teams backups do.

I think Ike Taylor has done a very good job covering Chad Johnson the past few years. If Ike could catch he would have double digit interceptions every year. I like McFadden and think he should have been starting last year.

If Woodley and Harrison bring the pressure that they should be able to bring, oldhead could cover the receivers!

It will be the same situation we have every year at corner and man-o phrased it best.
If the Steelers can establish the rush then the corners won't be forced to cover for more then a few seconds. If the rush isn't there it makes for a long afternoon. Ike Taylor and Troy Polamalu are good for basic coverage and are great in run support. The problem with Ike is routes that develop, or if the QB has time for routes that have more than one move. The problem with Troy is he has a hard time locating the ball when its thrown over his head/behind him. McFadden may or may not develop into the second corner but if the Steelers think he is going to then they need to start utilizing him in that fashion because Deshea isn't getting any younger. Ryan Clark is an adequate fit at safety but our free safety situation just makes me wanna reminisce of the days of Darren Perry. I know a lot of people think the Steelers should of went after secondary help in the draft but to pass on players that can develop with Ben Roethlisberger, not to mention they were the best players on the board, would have been a waste.
I think Woodley and Harrison will be devastating this year on the outside. If the offense can control the clock and keep the defense fresh the Steelers will be back in the top 5 on d.

Am I the only one that thinks the secondary is a Steeler strength? Yeah, Townsend is getting old but as of last year I didn't see any drop off in his play. As a group, i truly believe there is no better secondary in the NFL. So there pbbbt (j/k about the raspberry - still serious about the secondary)

I've always wondered what people were talking about when they bash our corners. Those guys play as well together as any secondary in the league. Even after Clark went down last year they hung in there. Polamalu's absence and then obvious discomfort after he came back proved to me too much to handle but what team could lose both it's starting safeties and still compete?
This defense reminds me of 2005 playoff game against the Colts when Joey could still play. We've never replaced Kimo but Woodley is a more of a pure pass rusher than Haggans. All we need is more pressure (and health) and this defense will be special!
Nice to hear how excited the Steelers seem to be with Timmons' improvement. I've kind of forgot about him. Top 15 picks are supposed to be special. If he truly is look out.

Mano, Old'hd, etc
you guys are dead on. a good/great pass rush will make a secondary look good/great. look what the Giants did to the Patriots in the SB. Plus, th | |
