From ESPN.com
The Los Angeles Lakers didn't expect Andrew Bynum back for the playoffs. Now, they just want him to be healthy for next season.
Bynum
The young center will seek a second opinion on the knee injury that has been slow to heal, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday. Bynum will see Dr. Steven Gecha on Wednesday in Princeton, N.J.
Bynum, who averaged 13.1 points and 10.2 rebounds through 35 games, was injured Jan. 13, suffering a bone bruise and briefly dislocating his knee cap.
The 20-year-old has been taking part in one-on-one drills but has been experiencing swelling. He has yet to go through a full practice.
Bynum's contract is up at the end of the season and he was in line for a maximum deal after the Lakers passed up multiple offers for the big man in trade scenarios.
Is he worth the Max Contract or is this the perfect time to negotiate a long term deal if you're the Lakers

OK its time right now to jump and offer Bynum, I think we can lock him up for 5yrs/50 Mil plus which should give the Lakers some cushion when they have to extend Kobe's salary
insidehoops.com reports Bryant's base salary at $19,490,625. Bryant signed a 7 year, $136.4 million contract in July of 2004. He may opt out of the contract after the 5th year.
to guarantee him not opting out in 2009, plus of course Odom
Lamar Odom
Salary: $13,248,596 Years Remaining: 2
PTS: 13.2 REB: 9.4 AST: 3.1 PER: 14.10
Here is where the NBA and business need to collide, I think Bynum will be (not now) worth a Max Contract in the future but not coming off a injury. THIS is where Mitch can finally dump his KUP-cake nickname and prove FINALLY he can negotiate and do his job to try to keep this team right now which is poised to keep Laker basketball going in the right direction. YES its playoff basketball but imagine how much Bynum would have commanded if he was healthy? EARTH to MITCH ... do something ....
Success while built still needs to be maintained, the Lakers have the pieces ... don't let it fall apart now

rhd420, to my understanding if the Lakers dont exercise their option to sign Bynum to a max deal, he becomes a restricted free agent which also means that the Lakers can match whatever anyone else offers, with that said, I say we dont take a chance, Andrew is worth it, give the kid the max deal, he'll earn it, we're not talking about Sam Bowie here!

i agree that locking down bynum is a smart decision, but i have to say that i dont think that having him and gasol makes odom expendable. granted odom pulls in a lot of money, but his versatility has really come to light once bynum and gasol started taking pressure off him. the Lakers have gotten a lot more out of him as a third option than they did as a second.

Hey Vic
I absolutely think your right about Bynum not being Sam Bowie and for what I've read, you're also right about the restricted FA. BUT let's face it, teams will probably be offering close to if not max deals for Bynum so realistically the Lakers should just go ahead and offer him the deal if it ever got to that point.
BUT .... realistically as well, you have Gasol, Kobe, and Lamar .... all 3 with big contracts and quite possibly the Lakers will in all likely hood have to make a decision on player personnel against the cap. Quite possibly the Buss family will pay the luxury tax, but I think this is a perfect opportunity especially with Bynum injured to negotiate a extension as opposed to a max to at least keep the 4 KEY players that the Lakers have NOW and for years to come.
Remember just a few years ago, the Lakers salary situation was really just 2 people, Shaq & Kobe, 2 players with Max Contracts. Imagine trying to keep it now with 3 players on Max deals going forward much less 4 and a surrounding cast. I just want Mitch to actually take advantage of a "golden" opportunity now as opposed to waiting later. You know, what a general manager does as opposed to just taking orders from Dr Buss.
Also kind of disturbing, notice some people on the boards these days some are for and against Bynum moving forward in the playoffs? YES I do think the Lakers will be dominate with him in the line up now as well as later with this squad, I just don't want it to get to Shaq proportions (remember that "pay me" year) and fans getting mad at Bynum when he starts to ask for a raise (he makes like $2.1 MIL a yr) and NOT know that it could have been diverted months before

I hate to say this, but I think everybody should just sit tight, hold their breath, and see what the outcome of this visit with Dr. Second Opinion reveals later today / tomorrow.
As much as I love Andrew Bynum, giving him a max contract now may be a little imprudent if the damage to his knee is somehow more severe than anyone could've possible imagined. When exactly is Bynum's contract up, does anyone know?
