I was listening to the Reds' pre-game show on WLW, and Paul Daugherty called tonight's game a "battle of two teams' aces," or words to that effect. I agree that right now Zambrano is the Cubs' ace.
I'm not so sure Aaron Harang can uphold the title of "Reds' ace" any longer. No offense to Harang, but he's 1-5 now and appears to be stuck in a rut, thought that rut may be the fault of the Reds' hitters. Edinson Volquez is 4-1 and appears to be on the upswing, though his run support has been monumentally better than Harang's.
Here's the numbers:
Harang -- 1-5, 55.1 innings pitched, 3.09 ERA, 47 Ks, 13 BBs
Volquez -- 4-1, 35.1 innings pitched, 1.27 ERA, 42 Ks, 18 BBs
Granted, Harang has had almost no run support in many of his games, including tonight's, another awful performance by the Reds' hitters. Harang's losses are all by 4 runs or less. Volquez's wins are all by at least 6 runs.
Harang's losses: 4-2, 9-5, 3-1, 5-2, 3-0
Harang's win: 4-1
Volquez's wins: 8-2, 9-2, 8-1, 10-1
Volquez's loss: 2-0
Has Harang been eclipsed by the youngster Volquez? Is there a clear "winner" in the race for ace?

Aaron Harang is definitely our ace. He's the only pitcher we have consistently eating innings and leading the staff. He should be 4-2 or 5-1, yet he's 1-5. Not his fault, he can't pitch AND hit his way to a win. That's the job of our hitters who have let him down. That being said, Edinson Volquez is our #2 starter. Arroyo is garbage and Cueto has had a few rough outings. In order for Volquez to be our ace, he has to go 7-8 IP nearly every time out.

Simply put. Harang is our #1 starter. He is proven! He will go out every fifth day and 9 times out of ten he is going to give you 7 plus innings. Harang is getting less than 3 runs per start, and should be 5-1, 5-2 at worst. He will eat up innnings and put less stress on your bullpen. Volquez is unproven and will not give you more than six innings in most outings due to his wildness. I think they are a solid one-two, but neither of them will win with this offensive offense!

This is a no brainer, not even a topic. There's two things to consider: You typed in the scores yourself and see that Volquez has had much more support, it's a lot easier to pitch with a big lead. Also keep in mind that everyone's going to put their ace against ours. Harang's had to pitch against Webb, Zambutthole, and probably everyone else's ace, without looking.

I thought it was a fair question to ask, and I'm happy to see the feedback going this way. I don't think Edinson Volquez would entertain the question, probably not even if he can eventually stretch his game into the seventh or eighth inning.
Something I didn't mention in the first post is that each has one no-decision so far for the year. Neither here nor there, just a number.
It's tough to see Aaron Harang enduring such a rough start to the season, especially since we know it is not his fault. As I mentioned in the first post, he has gotten almost no run support.
I wasn't trying to start any controversy or tick anybody off. It just sounded to me like the word "ace" rolled a little too easily off Daugherty's tongue when he referred to Harang. If I was Harang, I would be carrying a huge chip on my shoulder right now and looking for an opportunity to kick asses and take names. I think he is going to have to in order to make a statement and get some help from his hitters. Of course, I don't know how easy it is to motivate multimillionaires who clearly are NOT motivated right now.

Look the bottom line is Harang is a solid pitcher at best he is a 2, but more realistically he is a 3 guy and he has been ever since the Reds acquired him. It just so happens that the Reds had no ace at the time and still don't. Now you can make a case for Volquez however it is to premature he hasn't been around long enough nor would it be fare to him. You do have to give him his props because he is doing a far greater job then anyone could have imagined at this point in time. I certainly hope he continues to pitch well although it will be hard pressed to continue at the pace he is going for any pitcher.
