Honestly, I think that he believes he is still making a contribution to the game and to the lives of young men. I also believe that he genuinely feels that he can win one more championship.

Is it best for the program? probably not. But I for one don't believe it is my place to tell the best ever that he can't do it anymore.

pc, I'm not going to address each part of your novel, but I apologize that you took my post so harshly.  I feel no need to search for a link to back up my claim because reading the minimum athletic scholarship requirements by ACC schools remains fresh on my mind.  I know what I read and feel no need to prove it to you.

The victories you mention are meaningful to you.  I should have specified that I meant victories meaningful on the national scale.  I think I can fairly claim that VT made it to the national radar in the Vick-led 1999 season.  In the 9 bowl games starting with that season, your team has lost 6 of them with the only victories coming against Air Force, Clemson, and Louisville.  Again, I think my claim is supported.

I don't understand what is classless about my post.  I have a unique perspective on VT since I used to go to Blacksburg every other weekend for a little under two years.  I know much more about the program than you think.  You can call my post classless, but I will call your coach classless when he poured it on an already beaten Maryland team 55-6 on a Thursday night game I went to there a few years back.

If you told me Donnan and Harrack recruited a bunch of football-only morons I'd believe you. They still tell stories of Quincy Carter exempting drug tests. The grad rate is somewhat deceiving the better your progam is. If you have players like Stafford and Marino etc. who leave early for the millions the will show up as non-graduates if they don't comback within 6 years of entering. We could lose as many as 7 early entries next year.

Look you can think that Petrino sucks if you want...but it's very reasonable to understand how someone  could make an argument for or against a coach based on his former coaching experience in another conference (otherwise how in the world would AD's be able to make decisions about hiring coaches to their programs from other conferences? Saban, Meyer, Miles...now Petrino all from other conferences).

====================

Different arguments.  I'm not saying Patrino won't win in the SEC, but some people on here are ranking him as a top 5 coach in the SEC before he coaches a game.  No way.  You mentioned Saben, Meyers, and Miles.  They all have a proven track record of winning in our league. As for the Pete Carol comment......come on.  Not many coaches, even in the SEC, can match resumes (recent anyway) apples for apples with Carol, ESPECIALLY Patrino.

Don't get me wrong, Pete Caroll is a great coach. The amount of talent he has is a direct result of his ability to recruit and his coaching style, but seldom if ever does he step on a field with less talent than his opponent.

It's not about the x's and o's, it's all about the Jimmies and Joes.

One small correction, 965 is the football APG 1st in the SEC, mens basketball is 958 2nd to Vanderbilt. Just read this on Georgiadawgs.com

I see 2 positives....first, the New Years Bowls would actually mean something again.  There would be plenty of reason to watch them all and there would at least be the possibility of something positive for each of those teams.

They definitely would mean more. Georgia vs. VT would have been huge.Arguably, only the Kansas vs. Hawaii winner would be the only one of the 5 games that didn't have at least a shot at the title game.

Second, in most years we would at least narrow down the teams through an additional week of competition.

Absolutely.

And I think there is a third positive.....OR Double Negative.  IT IS NOT WORSE THAN WHAT WE HAVE TODAY.  So if it isn't worse, and makes the New Years Bowls mean something again through better matchups and it avoids the context of a playoff which clearly the presidents and the conferences are not ready to support, it seems to be a small baby step in the right direction.

BigDawgs,

I did read Barnhart's article online. I like it......a lot. And, if #1 meets #2 in one of the New Year's Day games instead of the final title game, who cares?  Chances are a few other teams are just as good so if the winner of 1 vs. 2 has to play another game, that's fine.

Good stuff BD. Thanks for sharing.
