Richt = Ron Zook

Is this a serious statement? Rict has 4 SEC East, and 2 SEC titles for God's Sake. Not to mention a 72-20 overall record. Ron Zook=Jim Donnan maybe.

Richt has never had an average season since he's been at GA. By the Auburn game in 2006, I thought Georgia was as down as it's ever been, but then they pulled out wins over #5 Auburn, and top 15 ranked Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, all in which had some of the top defenses in the country. Richt is no where near Ron Zook; that Mississippi State game, who only had 3 wins that season, cost Zook his job.

In order of preference:
1. Mark Richt
2. Tommy Tuberville
3. Les Miles
4. Urban Meyer
5. Sylvester Croom
6. Nick Saban
7. Phillip Fulmer
8. Steve Spurrier
9. Bobby Johnson
10. Houston Nutt
11. Rich Books
12. Bobby Petrino

bookdawg10,

Richt 6th or 7th.  Talk about unrealistic fans.  When are folks going to realize it takes more than being just good to win a title.  I guess Tuberville should have a title too.  Oh wait, we have been down that road.

Pckank.............

Lots of posters picking the Ole Ball Coach. None Florida fans. Theres a reason for that.

  • If a man inherites a fortune or Empire and keeps it going and takes care of it I can respect that.
  • If a man Builds a fortune or Empire from scratch by his own methods and ideas and kept it going for 12 years thats a whole different ball game.

Spurrier and Foley don't get along. Two big egos don't mix well. Spurrier is the Golden Boy. He's ours. Foley's done great but he's not a Gator. He's waiting for the SEC Comm job. (Breaking news, you heard it here first).

6 SEC Titles

2 National Title games

1 National Title

All from the ground up. No foundation laid............no history.............nada.........all from scratch. He made history right before your very eyes. You just don't know it yet.

South Carolina's SEC records the 5 years before Spurrier got there:

2000: 5-3
2001:5-3
2002:3-5
2003:2-6
2004:4-4

Total: 19-21 (47.5%)

South Carolina's SEC records the last 3 years with Spurrier:

2005:5-3
2006: 3-5
2007: 3-5

Total: 11-13 (45.8%)

Ouch. Way to turn that South Carolina program around Coach. You have taken a below average program and made them worse.

pcknack,

If I would rank Spurrier just based on coaching at USC he would be at the back of the pack no doubt. His history speaks for itself though. He won a NC and arguably reinvented offense as we knew it in football. I remember how painful some of the trips Kentucky took to the Swamp when Spurrier was there. He would be up 40 still passing long in the 4th quarter. You don't forget an offense like that. His history is ultimately what has me ranking him as #1.

Okay, based on accomplishments, of course Richt isn't the best coach. His career record doesn't lie and he ranks in the top coaches in winning percentage with Carroll, Stoops and Meyer. The best IMO is Spurrier, but he hates Georgia so I can't really bring myself to like him.

Thanks for all the feedback.  What I have been able to decipher so far is that the rankings have a lot to do with "likes or dislikes" versus "records".  I have got to get back to work, but if anyone has time, put the record of wins and losses by each coach while coaching in the SEC.  May or may not change a few minds.

Totally agree with this. Even under the criteria of 'if I were an AD starting a new program', to put Tuberville at ELEVENTH? Seriously? With what Auburn was before he got the program and where it is now?

I know the books will never say that Auburn won a national championship in 2004. But it's weird how because of that it's like it's not even worth mentioning that a BCS team did indeed go undefeated, and therefore Tuberville shouldn't get any credit for it.

Anyway, I'm flag waving a bit now so I'll stop. I don't like Les Miles per se but there's no way I could deny what he's done.

percy,

How many times do you want me to say it? He was solid in the 90s. His numerous SEC titles and national title speak for themselves. I was always very impressed with Spurrier and Florida in the 90s.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the thread is talking about right now. Otherwise, we would be rating him against Donnan, Holtz, DiNardo, Bowden, etc.

I still respect him. I just don't think he has the same passion now and, looking at some other replies on this thread, I am not alone in putting him in the lower half of the SEC coaching rankings right now.

I agree with PC here...I just don't see the fire on the sidelines he  used to bring couple that with marginal recruiting classes and you have a has been coach...

BUT....if he was back in Florida insulated by the talent pool and Coaches it could be a different story...kind of likethe way  Carroll is setup at USC...

3. Richt
4. Miles
5. Meyer
6. Tuberville
7. Fulmer
8. Nutt
9. Croom
10. Brooks

Miles and Meyer both have a NC, but Miles has more wins in 3 years and plus another division title.

Thank you, BigDawgs.  Per usual, you're a welcome dose of sanity.  Your skills are going to be in increasing demand the next few months as the number of deluded Georgia fans continues to grow... I think these pre-season polls are messing with some people's heads.

2% is what you would go out of your way with a post and call "worse"? Your reaching pckank. Has Spurrier done what we all thought he'd do @ SC?
