The Dallas Cowboys are in the beginning stages of discussions with agent Drew Rosenhaus regarding running back Marion Barber's future, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Cowboys feel the six-year, $34.5 million deal Michael Turner signed in Atlanta is in the general vicinity of what they want to pay Barber, while Rosenhaus is seeking between $40-60 million for his client.
Our View:These negotiations could get interesting, as the organization provided themselves with some leverage with the recent additions of rookie running backs Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.

Like most Dallas fans I love MBIII aka The Barberian. 40-60 million is just too damn much though. Yes he is a fun player to watch. He has developed into a great leader. He does spark the offense. BUT he is missing one important factor for a RB, and that is home run speed.
I think even Turner money is a bit much. Turner can be an every down RB. He can take it to the house from any place on the field. Playing MBIII 40-60 mil is like paying a Musin Muhammad (sp?) Chad Johson money. Of course MBIII is very productive and exciting, but his lack of speed holds him back from being a complete player.

What makes you say that? Turner's never carried the ball more than 15 times in any regular season game (and that came his rookie year; the last 3 seasons his high has been 11 carries), and he's topped out at 17 in the playoffs.
Just because Barber isn't a homerun threat doesn't mean he can't be a great back in the NFL. And just because Turner has breakaway speed doesn't mean he's the complete package.

All I have to say to Jerry is you better pay the man. If he spends money on Roy Williams, he better pay the guys that have actually earned it in recent years.

Heart & Soul - no price on what that did to our team last year and also the fan base. (We all saw how the team played at a higher level when he came in. Also, in all respects...he may not be able to pull off many 40+ plays, but give him the ball in the red zone or on third down and short and then tell me he's not one of the best.

Marion market value may be about 55 million for seven years with 20 million guaranteed. Only because he is young with fresh legs and he has been to the pro bowl. In my opinion, Barber would get this on about 10 of the teams in the league. Jerry should offer a three year 26 million with 10 million guaranteed. That is fair enough, but it will cost much much more to get a long term deal. Felix and Tashard will be ready in three years. Jerry would have to double the above deal to 52 million with 20 million guaranteed for seven years to get a long term deal. I say offer a three year contract.

Jerry needs to offer him a three year deal for $26 million and guarantee $10 million of that. MBIII's running style can not hold an every down RB. He is a punisher and someone like Felix Jones and Tashard Choice can be an every down RB given time to mature in the NFL; as long it as in a Cowboys uniform.

I like what I'm hearing here, 3 year deal worth 26 mill. What player in there right mind would bitch about that! Barber runs so hard that you know injury looms on the horizon. Don't get me wrong, I like MBIII, he's a stud,I want him on the team as long as possible.
If his legs are still under him in 3 years then sign him to more$$$$. This is more cap friendly.
You look at these contracts and can't help but wonder how NFL owners make money. I think the players own the NFL.

First of all let me begin by saying I love MBIII, I had a feeling he would be a beast. But that is too much money for a back who is only going to carry the ball 15-18 times, 3yr deal...he probably will be worn down by then anyways. Cowboys will go 12-4 this season.

I was thinking more like 5 million yearly after the 10 million signing bonus. If we end up franchising him next year, we will pay about 6 million for one season. We need to get some deal done that makes sense for a pro bowler. Long term at this point is almost impossible. Drew is not giving in that easily. How about 3 years 23 million with a 10 million signing bonus? That would give Barber 4 million yearly. That may not be worth it to Barber. I still say 3 years 25-26 million with 10 million signing bonus would get it done.

UGH! Rosenhaus is Marion Barber's agent? The dude is as slimy as they come.
I love how he says "between 40 and 60 million. That's a wide range...is it closer to 40 or 60? I love Marion Barber and all, but he's nowhere worth $60 million.

AxeMurderer,
You are right I don't know for sure that Turner can handle the load. We haven't seen him be an every down back. Although I did like what I saw from him during the playoffs.
What I do know for sure is this: he isn't a homerun threat, his running style is an injury waiting to happen and if you play him early he wears down before the game is over.
Yes he is the hear and soul when on the field. We all love him and he has a knack for the endzone. I don't think that is worth $40 mil. do you?
Oh and while Turners speed alone might not make him a complete back, it is the one thing you can't teach. You can teach: to block, run routes, catch the ball or even read the holes. Speed is the one thing you can't teach. So while it may alone not make him complete, it sure increases his chances.
