I am going to keep this thread going until we dump this piece of asbestos into the nearest lake or approved refuse container.

So... 5/05.08 Day 1 of the Corey Patterson futility thread

starting BA average.... .200

Continued to waste the 3 million spent on him but only came in as a late defensive substitute. Caught only fly ball sent to him, HALLEJUAH, but then made one god awful throw back into the infield, missing cut off man or any Reds player for that matter.

No AB's, no errors, just wasted money and exhibited candy arm.

He entered the game. That's what he did wrong.

Spending you hard earned cash to go to a Reds game only to be disappointed with a losing record (tickets, hot dog, beer, parking & gas): $150.00

Bringing your buddy to come play center field on your new baseball team: $3 million dollars

Dumping his sorry butt into the Ohio because he can't hit his weight: priceless

Paterson not only hurts this team because he sucks and can't hit shit but he hurt the team chemistry.

He hurt the team chemisty in that he is holding Hopper and Freel back.  Hopper is probably more deserving of the leadoff role then anyone else but if he is not there I want to see Freel playing Center Field over Paterson.  Freel has been voicing his frustration that he is playing solid baseball right now and Paterson still gets to many chances.  In one game last week I think Freel went 3-4 batting playing Center Field and then the next day Paterson got the start.  I truely believe our run production would be 2 runs a game higher if Paterson wan't our everyday Center Fielder.

Also Dusty is pissing me off.  He knows Paterson is on the hot seat and probably trying be traded be Walt.  Dusty is giving Paterson more playing time hoping he hits his way out of trade talks when it is obvious that Paterson is not deserving of the starting role and Freel is.

ok guys, i think we need to take a step back and look at some things...Last time i checked patterson signed a minor league deal and that would not pay him $3 mil.  i could be wrong about some clause in his contract or something but I am positive that he is playing on a minor league deal.

secondly, you are doing to him what all the idiot cub fans did to him when he was there...it is the beginning of may!  there are all stars and furture hall of famers that have worse numbers than what CoPat is doing right now so lets all just calm down.

as far as D goes, he is the Reds best defensive outfielder!  yes, Freel is good but Patterson covers more ground.

i bet in the first 2 weeks of the season none of you hated him...when he poped off 4 dingers and was hitting.  it is called a slump! they happen!  and yes, they happen more often to CoPat.

I think the blame (if any) should go to Dusty...Cory is not a leadoff hitter.  he just isn't.  he swings too much and never walks.   he should be batting 7th for the reds with Keppinger leading off.

Freel is a good player and is having a good season so far but the reason his numbers are so high is because he is taking all his AB's against lefties.  he crushes lefties and looks like a Jr. high player against righties.  you play freel everyday and he is a .260 hitter.

one final point...if you looks Carl Crawfords numbers and the numbers CoPat has put up the last 3 years and the ONLY difference is about .45 points on their batting average.  Carls Craword is known as one of the better players in baseball.....

Who gives a shit about Paterson's defense when the team is not scoring runs.

Paterson has never hit major league hitting and at the beginning of the season when he was I was still skeptical because in spring training he started off hitting everything and towards the end he couldn't hit the ball off a T.

Also I wouldn't have never believed but Paterson is hitting way below is Major league averages from before the season; which is a BA of .258 and an on base percentage of .294.

KCfan1, you say there are future Hall of Famers that are hitting worse then him, who are these future Hall of Famers you so claim.

I don't understand why he is playing so much, oh wait I know it is becuase he is playing good defense according to KCFan1, give me a F#$%ing Break.

On a final note comparing Paterson and Crawford is unfair to Crawford.  Crawford hit over .300 last year in the hardest division in baseball next to the AL Central so don't compare the two.  The highest batting average Paterson ever had was .270.

hey hoosierfan....you lose games if teams score more runs than you do. so D does matter. the Reds have the worst OF D in baseball so if you have to have someone in the middle that can cover ground.

to name some great players (completely off the top of my head)  who had bad first months equal to CoPat:  Ryan Howard, Griffey, Phillips, Soriano,Prince Fielder,Jason Giambi, do i really need to go on??

oh and by the way smart guy....the last 3 years Patterson played in the same damn division as Crawford and batted anound .25 with 15HR and 30-40SB's same as crawford but like i said before he had a better batting average.

do us all a favor and at least have a couple good points is you are going to post again....but what did i expect....you are a hoosier fan.

if Corey Patterson played that day, then you have your answer.

KCFAN1 - corey patterson and Carl Crawford is a pretty bad comparison.  their numbers aren't all that close.  from '05-'07

corey patterson OPS+:  54(!!), 94, 80
carl crawford OPS+:  111, 113, 117

100 is the ML average, 54 is as bad as your typical backup catcher, or worse (last year, 8 pitchers did better than 54).  in '06 he almost made it to being league average, which i might add is weighed down by all the catchers, NL pitchers, and bench players who put in thier typically bad numbers over the season.  patterson has been below average virtually his entire career.  this on top of the fact that he plays OF, where every team absolutely counts on those spots for some offensive production.  he's a black hole for an offense.

CP OBP:  .254(!!), .314, .304 (atrocious, and doubly so for a leadoff hitter)
CC OBP:  .331, .348, .355 (not bad, and at least trending in the right direction)

just because patterson hits as many HR (not many) and steals as many bases (not all that useful) as crawford doesn't mean he is as good as crawford.  not even close.  and to close my rant, i will assert that crawford is a fair bit overrated, simply because his stats work well for fantasy.
