Now that Cedric Benson has been arrested, does that breach his contract in any way?  If we decide to cut him for his legal troubles, do the Bears still take a salary cap hit?

If they can cut him without having to take a salary cap hit, I think once the Bears organization finds out about this entire situation, they should cut him.

And if they do cut him, who do we sign?  Who is still available?  Shaun Alexander?

I think this adds fuel to the fire CSF for getting rid of Benson but salary cap wise, the Bears are still on the hook for the remaining 2ys @ $5M if they cut him.  Barring any commissioner or NFLPA reprieve the Bears right now being $16M under would be at $11M.  Had to do so research on google.

Do I want the "mistake" gone, yes, will it cost the Bears still, yes.  Doesn't it feel like a messy divorce?

I still say cut him and take the hit. The final outcome will certainly outweigh the price we pay. It's simple addition by subtraction.

Agreed, though with the NFL saying it will penalize teams for having personell issue players, The Bears should be allowed to cut him without penalty, IE: Salary cap hit.

I think the policy that states they still have to pay him if they want to cut him for behavior is redundantly rediculous.  Especially since they will penalize the Bears for having him on the team.

CSF, the Falcons still had to pay Vick even though he was sentenced to jail. Now I know they took him to court to try to get back some of the money, but I don't think they did win that case and they also can't cut him because they would face huge cap penalties..

I hope the Bears get rid of him, but I think the best way to go about it where they get hit with the least amount of cap penalties is to place him on injured reserved for this season, then cut him once the season is over making the cap hit smaller..that is my personal opinion..either way though, he needs to go

Sorry to rain on your parade, but there is no way that the Bears are going to cut Cedric Benson. He is still only 3 years in the league, which is usually the time which to declare a draft pick a bust or not, but look at the position and whom would have to step up if we cut him. Matt Forte will be a good back in this league but he is unproven and will not be handed the starting job just like that. We need Benson on this team, whether it is to compete with matt forte to bring out the best in both backs or to be the starter for this team in the 08-09 season. If we were to cut benson then our depth chart would look like this.

RB1: Adrian Peterson
RB2: Matt Forte
RB3: Garrett Wolfe
3DB: Matt Forte

There is no way that Lovie Smith would allow this team to go into camp with this as our depth chart, not accounting the salary cap hit that the bears would take in cutting a top 5 pick in the draft(the penalty would cripple any chance of making any moves this year) and would not like to see Cedric Benson cripple this team while sitting at home collecting money for not playing(if he is cut no other team would pick him up based on the fact that Benson would still demand a rediculous amount to be a long shot sleeper).
