seriously...you people need to get a grip on life...you tree huggers can go to another chat room and cry on how horse racing is sooooo horriibllee...when its not..you obviously dont understand the sport enough to realize that theres a risk in EVERYTHING that you do...whether its horse racing or baseball...it would be cruelity to deprive these animals from running...which they love.

Look, horses may love to run but thats not the point. A horse can only run so hard and you can not push a horse harder on undeveloped legs! They need to be 4 years old if they are going to be raced and I mean 4 by their actual birthdate! Dont say we obviously dont understand the sport enough to realize theses a risk in EVERYTHING that you do, I have horses and train horses so I KNOW what I am talking about!!!! Yes, there are risk in everything you do, but you are asking for risk when you run young horses that hard!! And you say its cruelity to deprive these animals from running, come on now, let them run in the field at their own pace, no one is stopping them from running there!! I am just saying, run them at an age when they are ready if you are going to race them!

yes i agree that it is wrong to run them when their legs arent fully developed, but still, you cant stop the triple crown from being run..obviously horses have done it...there would be no horse racing if there were no triple crown...so theres nothing that you can do to stop them from running horses at age 2 and 3, its just the way it goes...its the history of the sport.

I can assure you this fillies horses legs were developed. You don't run 100 speed figures with under developed legs...So blaming it on that is rediculous....THis was a Special filly that had a freak accident plain and simple...Its horse racing...And it will forever be...

Where are all of you at when dogs are running the Iditarod?

doesnt that sound a little racist? thats why they offer the triple crown and other stakes races to both sexes, so the talented fillies, like rags to riches and eight belles, can prove to the big boys that theyre all buisness, and what did eight belles do today? she came in second...she prolly would have won it if big brown didnt get a dream trip. this filly was sometihng else, and some people just refuse to believe that sometimes, the girls are better than the guys...
ProudSpell,
Very well said. I was at the track today too. Very sad day. I will remember Big Brown but when I think of the 2008 Derby I will always think of Eight Bells. She was better than 17 of the boys today.
BTW- Welcome to my favorites...

well gabe saez the jockey said that after the finish line, she started the gallop out awkwardly, and he pulled her up, and then she collapsed....idk if the ground broke beneath her, or her ankles just gave way....but she deff fractured her front ankles and didnt have a good leg[s] to stand on...such ashame.

I agree, horse racing as it is practiced today is barbaric. Horses are not fully developed until they are 4 years old. Yet they race them at 2, and start training earlier than that. Many horses are raced too often without enough rest in between. And remember these tragedies we see at the major races are just the tip of the iceburg, over 700+ horses have to be put down every year because of race related injuries. Another improvement needed is the track. Many tracks are horrible, causing horses to stumble and fall. They now have more advanced synthetic tracks that can minimize injuries. I'm not some PETA advocate, I'm not some bleeding heart liberal, I just hate to see horses like this have their lives ended for no good reason. I know they were bred to race, I know they love to run, just change the way it is practiced and focus more on the welfare of the animal instead of the almighty dollar.

Scott Cacciatore will now speak on this matter....you have a uneducated view of this subject. First of all every trainer and owner LOVES their horses and would never do anything to hurt them..especially when it comes to horses good enough to run in the Kentucky Derby...you speak when you know nothing. These are horsemen that spend their lives tending to horses..I think they know best. Also, horses are born to run..they run everyday whether they are on a racetrack or now..these are thoroughbreds...they have to be taken out to run on a daily basis...yes occasionaly something tragic happens like today but thousands of races go off without any injury to any horse....by running these horses we arent abusing them...they love to run...your lost in space buddy. Actually in the history of horse racing today was the first time that a horse actually b roke both its front legs during or after a race...the FIRST time ever...its just a tragic circumstance...but things like this happens in life..to animals..to humans..everyday...its only blown out of proporation because it happens on such a big stage. When a race car driver dies during a race do you say we should close down the sport?? when an airplane crashes do you say we should stop all flights? when someone dies in a car accident do you say noone should drive anymore?? your generalized uneducated statements are not impressive...try a little harder next time..i think you can do better
