I only have one witness (my wife), but I called for Eight Belles and Returntoglory to be in the top 3 with Brownie.  That was a great race until the end, and when I saw the first shot of Belles laying there, I told my Wife what was about to happen. Thats a sad day for the Derby, and at 17 1/2 hands high...what a beautiful filly to watch run with the boys. Tragic ending.

Whoever asked why horses get put down, I hope you got your answer. With no front legs to stand on and infection being key...

Great thread and posts people, Im not to proud to admit sadness either.

Here's the link to the story I mentioned earlier about Derby injuries...

http://www.kentucky.com/304/story/395077.html

As sad as it is, it's still suprising that this has only only once in 134 runnings...

you are absolutly right. not only infection setting up but gangreen i saw this once on the backside of monmouth park nj they put screws in a slab fracture and gangreen set up under the cast . he was in terable pain and had to be put down anyway. no guarentees with this. also the risk of laminitis. which there is no cure. a sad ending to yet another fine animal.

Thanks for the link, there have been some injuries though and that's just for that one race.  I read over 700 horses have to be put down every year in America because of race related injuries.   I'm not against horse racing, they just need to change the way they do it.  A horse should not be racing until it is 4, that's when they are fully developed.  They need to change the tracks to better synthetic surfaces to minimize injuries, they need to stop the drugging, and give them enough rest between races.  I know this won't happen because money rules all, but it's sad that all those horses have to die because of greed.

mrenchirito.....very well written post.......very good suggestions for helping to lessen the suffering....however, being a dedicated to prevention believer I know that horse racing is a form of animal abuse......and on another thread someone had the nerve to describe the tragedy as the horse considering her death as heroic and how she would have wanted to end her life.....HUH!....how absurd!....that horse was forced to race and on a track designed by humans and in all probability given performance enhancing drugs, etc. she had no choice!

Surely she would have preferred to live as she was created by nature instead of a creature used for making some humans wealthier.....shame on all those who were the cause of her death.... regardless of how the truth is twisted and turned it is still the reality.....she died because of humans and their assorted selfish reasons.

nsbradley, thank you.  My hope is to get common sense rules implemented in horse racing.  I know you want it banned outright, but that's probably never going to happen.  I just hope that by putting in those conditions I mentioned earlier the number of injuries suffered by the horses will drop dramatically.  Thoroughbreds do love to run and it's my belief they even want to win when they race.  I have nothing against competition, but when animals are involved we need to make sure their welfare is first and foremost since they have no say in the matter.  That obviously isn't true today.

These animal humane critical postings are another form of trolling. This message board is meant for horseracing enthusiasts. I'm sure there are message boards for the animal human folk and should be used for such. We handicappers promise not to come over to your boards and troll by making fun of your preferences.

Last I checked there is still a 1st Amendment and we can post about whatever we like.  If you don't like it, don't read it.

"we handicappers"

What an appropriate name, because that's how many horses turn out... handicapped and then dead.

Youve got to be sh**ting me.

This is still the sport of Kings, so the Queen and Princess can just stick to synchonized swimming. And I cant believe the amount of chimicals that go into a pool just so these swimmers can pee without creating as much filth. Its rediculous and should be banned.
