Unbelievable filly, Eight Belles, takes 2nd in the Kentucky Derby.  Then breaks both front ankles and is euthanized immediately.   Nice run but sad day for hard work it takes to get into that position.

How does this happen? If the legs were going to break, wouldn't they during the actual race? To break both ankles in cool down seems strange.

I believe i saw her take a bad step before the finish.  She must have broken 1 about 25 feet before the finish and the other trying to slow down and favoring the other.

Start racing them at 4. Tired of all the old foggies talk about tradition. How many have to die during the race..take that number, mutiply by 100 and you have how many have been severly injured and completely broke down before they even try to make the race.

Another horse dies, more people cry, old friggin bastards talk about how "thats the game"...nothing changes.

SICK

Richard Porter (owner of Fox Hill Farms) and Larry Jones, the trainer of Eight Belles must be devastated. Any animal enthusiast can feel their grief. What a tragic ending to a horse racing's crowning even, The Kentucky Derby.

I believe i saw her take a bad step before the finish.  She must have broken 1 about 25 feet before the finish and the other trying to slow down and favoring the other.

that misstep, faceitusuck, was actually her switching her leads.

her jockey gabe saez...said that he noticed she was galloping out awkwardly. and he was trying to pull her up...and hten she just collapsed...

larry jones and rick porter were actually celebrating and they were making there way to the finish line....adn then they were rushed to the 61/2 furlong marker...

its ahsame, but its the sport...its happens...

my <3 goes out to the connections..

Rest In Peace Eight Belles <3

So whats the deal with the killing of the horse if it breaks the ankles?  Why cant they heal them over time and let it get better?  Is it absolutely neccessary to kill the animal?  I dont know anything about horse racing but I would like to figure this one out.

yes it is a necessity...she had no front feet to stand on...she couldnt get up...she would not be able to live...she was in agonizing pain...it is the just and humane thing to do..for the animals sake..to end its misery...

if you broke both your ankles..and it broke the skin and you were bleeding...would you want to be left there and have to live with the pain..knowing that you would never be able to accomplish anything more in your life?

i certainly wouldnt...i wholeheartedly agree with the decision..its the right thing to do for the animal..seh doesnt deserve to suffer.
