Josh is the veteran, but the only way he starts is if Parcells and Sparano have little faith in Beck's or Henne's ability to give them the best shot to win out of the gate. Beck is a good QB, in fact, had he come out this year, he still would have been ranked higher than Henne. That doesn't mean Parcells would have drafted him over Henne though. Unfortunately, and this is not a knock on Vernon Carey, when Beck or any QB was out there, there was really not very good protection on either side but especially the left side. VC is a RT and a very good one but not a good LT. And that is why Cleo Lemon had the most success (if you want to call it that) because he could call his own number if protection broke down and tuck and run better than the others. Beck, Henne, and McCown are all pocket passers. However, Beck is a better passer than McCown but has more scramble ability than Henne. Now that there is a good LT in Miami, and a better supporting cast pass protection wise, a pocket passer has a chance to flourish. The job is anyone's to win, but I think that Beck is the front runner.
I know Beck struggled a bit last year but that's to be expected from
a) rookie QB's
b) QB's who get smacked around regularly as a result of bad pass protection.
Remember last year with all the questions, why all these short dump off passes, why don't they throw deep, yada yada yada?
There was no time! But that all changes this year.
