It may make for better television, and they certainly have the opportunity to build up to it over the 5 month gap, but from a player's perspective I would disagree. On the surface, nothing changes other than the time between making the table and playing it out. But if you're a relative unknown riding an unimaginable hot-streak (Moneymaker, Gold, Yang, etc.), I think it takes away an advantage you have. Some players will attest to feeling on top of their game for periods of time, but never consistently. A break such as this will more than likely find a few of them 'off' that peak. And I also don't know that it would be fair to them to give their more-seasoned opponents additional time to analyze their play (they will have access not only to the broadcast portion of the main event prior to the final table, but also any other events that the players will probably participate in during the break.). Isn't one of the keys to winning tournament poker the ability to make adjustments on relatively short notice?
As for the payouts, the only amount that could be paid out would be for 9th place, after which the 1st person eliminated would basically get nothing.
By the way, I'm pretty sure the WSOP would gladly take a 5 month 'float' on about $20-$30m (unless they add it to the pot)!!
