Tigers fan here, I have Francisco Rodriguez (Frankie) on my fantasy team and I just notice he is on pace for 59 saves this season , thats just plain crazy, now the input i need is why are the Angels useing him so much this early ? is your bullpen banged up ? or is it some thing else ? .

The Angels have just been in a lot of close games the last few weeks, solar. Franky seldom pitches three days in a row...I don't think he's been too overworked so far, but he hasn't been "lights out" either. His fastball that used to be 95-97 is 92-94. He is getting the job done though.

to me its like any other manager who has a good closer if you have a lead  in the 8th or 9th innings of 3 runs or less you bring in your stopper case in point Tuesday night Joe Saunders is pitching a gem 2 runs over 8 innings Angels up 2-0  but in the 9th Scioscia brings in K-Rod  so I think its a case K-Rod is being used even at times when its not necessary

Also last week K-rod came in for one out and got a save so that kinda boosts his save line a bit

Yeah it's not really our bullpen is banged up it's just that that last couple weeks the Angels have won by 3 runs or less many times, giving K-rod alot more save chances.  Like Halo22 said he hasn't been lights out.  He seems to give up a hit or walk in each appearance almost.  But he is saving games.

He will end up with 40-45 saves this year. Like those guys said, he has been walking alot of batters this year, and he gives us Angel fans heart attacks now and again, but he is getting the job done.

K-rod will continue to get all the save chances early in this season for a couple of reasons.

1. the bullpen has been banged up per say

2. there have been a lot of close games

3. this one might be the most important... K-rod is a free agent after this season, so if they decide not to resign him I personally think the Angels will use him as trade bait. Who would pass up a closer that has 25-35 saves by the trade deadline, so the more saves he gets the more his value will go up. Just think about the teams contending.... Do you think they are happy with there closer or do you think they will deal for a solid closer who will shut people out in the playoffs. It might be the Angels only chance per say to get that big bat right before the playoffs (I personally think our bats are doing a good job, but you have to look at all possiblities).

There's my input. I hope it helps.

There's mostly close games because of all the injuries the people have talked about above me, and it's partly because some of our bigtime hitters have not quite hit their stride yet.  Vladimir Guerrero is slightly struggling, and I've noticed that every time I watch Gary Matthews Jr. bat, he hits into a double play or a popup or something.  Once the pitching gets healthy, and the hitting gets on track, the save chances will probably dwindle a little bit for Francisco Rodriguez.

I doubt that Scioscia is looking to use him as trade bait.  The first reason is just as you said, the bats are doing well and unlike in past years, the big bats will be there come late August to October.  Also, I think the Halos realize that they need as many games possible in the beginning of the year, seeing how Oakland is performing much better than expected (don't forget they don't have Chavez right now).  Since Oakland tends to be streaky towards the end of the season, if the Angels can get through this month with a four to five game lead over Seattle and/or Oakland, that will help them in the long term, so that is why Frankie has been used so much recently.  Besides, I'm not sure that Shields/O'Day/Speier are in their grooves yet.
