The Wimbledon Champions will each receive $1.49 million this year.  Last year was the first time women received equal prize money.

Why equal prize money when the men play best of five sets, and the women play best of three sets?

The aforementioned suggest that the men receive $1.49 million, and the women receive $1.00 million, as Wimbledon Champions.

Now, that sounds and looks about right.

What is your opinion?

I agree with you in some respects regarding the difference in winning 5 set matches every other day vs three set matches. However, women's tennis has as many fans as men's tennis and generates as much income. Equal income + equal interest + women's rights = equal prize money. Like it or not, equal prize money is finally here to stay.

This has been discussed here before. Personally, I wouldn't have any problem with the ladies receiving equal but not in majors when the men have to play best of 5 and they only have to play best of 3. It just doesn't seem right to me.

The pay should be based on how much money mens and womens tennis brings in.  If mens tennis makes more then they should get more, if womens makes more they should get more.  I'd like to see a link on how much money each bring in, because I find it hard to believe that womens tennis makes as much as mens.
