Okay, maybe I'm just obsessing about this too much, but I gotta get some other opinions.

Does anyone else feel that the Wings defense hasn't been playing as well as they could be?  My struggles with Rafalski are well-documented in various threads, and I really wonder what has happened to Lilja?  I don't remember him being this tentative...almost like he doesn't want to go full speed or try to hit anyone.  It seemed there were several times last night that he didn't finish his checks.  Not that messing with the D pairings would even be considered at this point, but, in my ideal world, they would be as follows:

Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart

Brian Rafalski and Niklas Kronwall

Brett Lebda and Chris Chelios

OR Lebda/Stewart and Lidas/Chelios

Keep Llija on the bench.  Hell, activate Meech and keep him as the seventh D.

Any opinions?

I completely agree with you there. The only change I would make is switch Chelios and Raflaski.

Really?  Chelios/Kronwall and Lebda/Rafalski?

I admit that Brian Rafalski paired with someone who has Brett Lebda's wheels would be interesting offensively, but who's gonna clean up the mistakes?  Lebda is a decent positional D, but not the physical presence Kronwall is.  He's also not as good positionally as Nicklas Lidstrom.  Lebda/Rafalski would be a high-risk/high-reward pairing.  Chelios and Kronwall would certainly be physical, but I shudder to think what would happen if they both got caught skating backwards on an odd-man break.  Cheli has great stick control, but he's not nearly as fast as he once was.  Kronwall is big and plays his spots well, but he can get out of position, especially if he goes for a big hit.  I don't see Chelios being able to bail him out if that happens.

This is completely wishful thinking, but wouldn't it be great to have Fisch back?  Can you imagine a back line where Chris Chelios is your 7th D?

I agree that Liljia should be kept on the bench. When it comes to be playoff time, he seems to be nervous and always fumbles the puck and gives the other team great scoring chances. He did it a couple times in game 4 against Colorado.

Lilja was only on the ice becuase Chelios was out w/ injury.  As soon as Chelios is back Lilja will be a healthy scratch again.  Babcock replaced Lilja with Lebda after game 2 or 3 of the Nashville series and has been using six defensemen throughout the playoffs.  Lilja was just an injury replacement for game 4 of the Avs series, and the only way he gets back on the ice in the playoffs is if someone else gets hurt.
