This guy is on a plane by himself. He is 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP (not bad numbers), and he hit .370-ish with 4 HR in 65 ABs last year.

No pitcher has hit like that since Mike Hampton, and he had a full season.

Brad penny hit .279 last season and is currently hitting .308.  About twice what million dollar baby Andrew Jones is hitting.

I had the priviledge to watch him at Tulane once he transferred over from Georgia Tech.  He was an absolute beast at the plate, and one of the best pitchers in the conference.  He is an unbelievable athlete, and the D-Backs got him at a steal in the 3rd rd.  His teammate from Tulane, Brian Bogusevic went to the Houston Astros (coincidence he hit that HR against the Astros) in the 1st rd.

Great Job Micah, Roll Wave!

I am not so sure about that.  Carlos Zambrano is a match in both Pitching (maybe even better there) and hitting.  And Micah isn't the only SP used as a PH.
Off the top of my head these guys have been used in PH roles more than once this year (and not just because the bench was already empty)
1. Carlos Zambrano
2. Jason marquis
3. Adam Wainwright
4. Micah Owings

Short list I know but a few years ago the list was at Zero and until last year it was 1 or 2 at best.  But lets not forget Ankiel who is a SP turned field player.  The notion that Pitchers can not hit is BS.  And while there are a few stand outs most do pretty well even if that is just to lay down a good sac Bunt every so often (another not so easy skill).

I think it would be an interesting idea to try and work Owings in as a spare corner outfielder over the next couple of seasons. There's no doubt in my mind that he could hit cleanup for a few teams in the league. I know that sounds funny, or like I must be really biased -- or stupid -- but the guy can really hit. Everything he touches moves fast and goes far, and he can hit off-speed stuff. That homerun he hit against the Astros was a decent pitch, a slider away that he took to the opposite field. On a bum ankle, too. Putting him in the field as a defender might be too risky, but he would definitely help out with his bat.

Most of the major league pitchers were the best hitters on their teams up until college when they started specializing. Heck, most of the pitchers in the majors were probably the greatest atheletes that ever came out of their high schools period. But if you don't practice it and don't work your butt off on it, even great athletes can't just step up and hit other major league pitchers. So, sure he is probably a great athelete, has great hand/eye coordination, but hitting over .400 is mostly just luck for him. Just ask every professional major league batter since the .400 mark was last reached.

Wesley Ferrell still holds the record for most HR's by a pitcher during a season, nine. It will interesting to see how Owings does over the long haul.

Hey teets3,

Bob Forsch swung a decent bat there for a few years in Busch Stadium.  However, I can never forget watching Juaquin Andujar corkscrew himself into the ground on each cut he took while he was in a redbird uni.
