That's right people the Diamondbacks, Marlins, Orioles, and Athletics are all in first in each of their divisions. Together, those teams do not have a salary number to match the fourth place Yankees. Just a little food for thought.

For years now i've wondered why teams like the Yankees have such blind loyalty from their fans.  If my team had a payroll around the 200 million a year mark and didn't dominate every season, I would have to question if they really know what they are doing.  Sure the Yankees are the most marketable sports franchise in the world, but what does that have to do with BASEBALL.  Nothing.  That's just the business side.  I'm a sports fan, not a marketing major.  Wins are all that matters to me.

Now being a Phillies fan, it's not like I have seen the greatest baseball in my life, but at least we can say that we haven't been trying to buy pennants.  (See Red Sox).  If all teams were on a level playing field like the rest of professional sports, the Yankees and Red Sox mystique would not exist the way it does.  Why would anyone in Royals land care about baseball when they KNOW that they can never compete with those teams?

I am sure in the end that the only team that's in first now will finish there are the Diamondbacks.  I just don't see the other teams hanging in there the whole way.

The only way to beat the big money teams is to build through the draft, which is how my Phillies are winning games now.  Once Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels are all making veteran money, at least two of them won't be wearing red pinstripes, they will be blue i'm sure.  We can't match what the Yankees have to offer.  That's really a shame.

It just kind of irks me that teams like the Marlins and Rays receive money from mlb and are in the top 10 in operating profit ( Marlins 35.6 mil, Rays 29.7mil) while teams that pay players like the Tigers and Angels ( Tigers 4.6 mil, Angels 15.2 ) are near the bottom. To me that almost feels like stealing. A quick accounting lesson, the Marlins had an operating profit of 27 % last season. I run a business and most don't post numbers that good. Most are 7-10% before taxes and such. The fans in Florida are getting ripped off by owners who won't pay players and line their pockets at the fans expense. I'm not saying they can't make money I just think some of that should put into the product on the field.

And with all that information availible to the public, it wont change anything.

The next time the Yankees win it all, all you will hear is............

"OH...YOU GUYS JUST BUY ALL YOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS...THAT'S ALL YOU CAN DO IS BUY EM' WAH WAH WAH WAH...."

I kind of like the way things have been the last several years with a team like the Marlins and Diamindbacks making us be able to say "YOU BOUGHT YOUR WAY INTO THE WORLD SERIES TO LOSE TO US...WAH WAH WAH!!!"

I find it downright amazing how the Marlins do what they do.  They have a payroll less that ARods salary, yet are leading their division after the first month.  And with the profits they are making, they could  go out and be buyers if they're still in contention in several months to fill a gap or two and find a way into the playoffs.   They were smart in getting Willis out of there and off their payroll.  And I'm sure that the young talent they got from Detroit in that trade will come to alot of good use.  I'm not a Marlin fan, but I have to tip my hat to their GM, he gets more bang for the buck than any other.
