I am excited about the upcoming football season! Everywhere I look online all of the early predictions for the Hogs are either fifth or sixth in the West. I am glad no one thinks we are going to be any good! Coach Petrino has got a great staff and I feel that he will not get outcoached in any games this year. Yes, I know we have lost some serious talent this year, I watched the NFL Draft. how could a team so talented just go 8-4 then get slobberknockered by Mizzou in the Cotton Bowl???? Anyone who truly knows football, know that games are won on the line of scrimmage and Coach Petrino keeps saying that our Offensive and Defensive lines are a strong point! I think we are going to surprise so people and I look for London Crawford and D.J. Williams to make all SEC this year! Go Hogs!

Well i se it like this. We lost what carried us last season, i see the hogs having a rough time next season. I sure hope Petrino can turn it around real quick, but doing it by next season will be hard.

The Hogs are gonna make some serious noise. Mark it down we are going to be a high caliber team this year. Nobody talked about Kansas, Mizzou, Georgia, etc last year so i will stand by my heart and believe that anything can happen. Michael smith looked amazing in the spring game and the installation of the pas game is only going t open up our running game. We will find our niche and our schedule has all the making of an upsetting season!!!! Fla, bama, lsu all at home. there will be some upsets and i love the fact that we are getting zero respect! let them underestimate us because it will only make us better.

bobby knows how to coach at the college level, no doubt about that. but in the thick of conference play, look for him to bail and start coaching tennessee after phil fulmer's fat a$$ gets run out of knoxville.

Oh come on now dirty.....Petrino has to hang around for a little while or no one will give him a shot! I think he stays at Arkansas for at least five years.

Honestly, I don't see fat Phil going anywhere, at least for a whie. Tenn fans tried to oust him last year and that started a huge uproar. I will be positive about Petrino, but his history is a little shakey. I will reserve my judgement. RazorbackG, I have to say I am as excited as you are about football coming back in. I can't wait...

The Hogs are going to make some noise, but the question is whether it will be positive or negative. I was at the spring game and saw a lot to be happy about, but I also walked away knowing that this was the first string against the second string and wondered if this play would stand up in an SEC game.
Michael Smith did look good, but it was against the second string defense. I was more impressed with Barnett making his runs against the first string defense than I was with Smith running in wide open spaces against the second teamers. I also think that DeAnthony Curtis can be a difference maker depending on how much work he puts in between now and fall practices. It would not surprise me in the least to see him get plenty of reps with Barnett and see Smith get squeezed out of the rotation and become a change of pace back.
Hooray, Casey looked comfortable in the pocket! Never would have thought it possible, but he showed a lot of poise and made some good throws. On the down side though, he is still gun shy about throwing the deep ball. The play will be there and he will cock and load but not fire. Hopefully that will change with more time in this offense.
The first team defense looked good, especially the D-line. The D-backs, looked a little soft compared to what we have had, however, Ramon Broadway on the white squad looked like he made a case to be considered a starter after the spring game and could be a possible shut down corner if he continues to work.
The receivers looked good catching the ball at times, but obviously will need more work and get used to the idea of having balls thrown their way anytime anywhere after having to take naps during the games in the HDN offensive system.
Totally different offensive scheme, very exciting to watch! A solid defensive line, decent linebackers and OK defensive backs leads to the possibility of a fantastic season. Prior to watching the spring game I thought that 6-6 would be OK, but now I am thinking a good bowl game is a possibility and if our weaknesses continue to be improved upon who knows where we can go.
OK, I am done with my novella.

"Totally different offensive scheme, very exciting to watch!"
I have waited many years for a balanced attack from the Hogs. Many coaches have promised it, but they all seem to go back to run, run, run. While this scheme has been somewhat successful some of the time, it never seems to work in the big games.
Thanks for the insight bdh - I would have thought that this would surely be a "rebuilding" year for the Hogs, but college FB today, seems like most teams lose their best players every year, and rebuilding doesn't take as long as it used to.
So I am hoping for a surprise season from the Hogs. Should be exciting!

Dey2 i think the reason the hogs run, run, run as you say is because they had 2 excellent running backs, and a average to below average QB.
I wished we could have both McFadden and jones back next season. Just think of what arkansas could do if they just had a good QB and those to coming back. Man the SEC would be in trouble.

Why hasn't anybody been talking about michael smith, heck he averaged 12yds a carry in the red&white game. I don't understand why some people want to cut him down for his 5' 7" size, there was two great backs in the NFL that were great runningback, thomas and sanders, two small runningbacks that turned out to be superstars.
12yds a carry they really need to give this guy a chance. It sounds like we have a felix jones or better in the making.

"i think the reason the hogs run, run, run as you say is because they had 2 excellent running backs, and a average to below average QB"
That is true. But it seems like the "chicken or the egg" problem - do we have great RBs and average QBs because UA is traditionally a running school? I think ultimately the coach has to commit to a balanced attack and then the good QBs and receivers will come to the UA, along with the great RBs.
I do like Michael Smith - he shows a lot of skill and could put up big numbers this year.

Michael Smith is somewhat like Fred Talley, smallish but extremely quick through the hole and downfield in the blink of an eye. However, he is not as strong as Talley an 12yds per carry against the 2nd team defense on delays and draws just doesn't impress me. Granted, if he wasn't as quick as he is he probably doesn't average 12 per, but it was the 2nd team defense. If he can do this against Texas in September then I will gladly give him his props.

Call it what you want Nutt has always liked to run, the passing game was always secondary. Casey Dick average or below sorry just can't agree with that, 4th year 4th different system and he's still the man. That spell above average QB! The main problem with the passing game was no WRs! Coach P. picked up on that in a hurry and said these guys must learn to catch the ball or it doesn't matter who the QB is and if you really paid attention to the spring and went to some of the practice you would of saw he went into over kill on these WRs. I think if you reflect back a little last year you will see that.

Casey Dick, above average? I haven't seen much evidence to support that. Granted, he has not been given much opportunity to prove his passing ability with Nutt - since it was usually 3rd and long. And I do agree the WR's have not been very good as of late (a couple of exceptions, yes). But Casey will have to prove he is above average, and not just "the best we can get" at a run-only program.

Dr. Truth is just waiting for Casey to have a big year this year so he can say the ole "I told you so" and prove me and a bunch of others wrong.
I hope YOU'RE right Truth...and that I'M wrong...just for the record.
The fact is Nutt just isn't good at developing QB's. He was the OC most of his years and flopped in the passing game department.
He inherited Clint Stoerner for his first two years so he had someone that could remotely throw the ball those years....but after that, when he was on his own steam...nada, zilch for QB development and passing game.
So he relied heavily on freak running options. Luckily for us we always had great OL and just happened to have some great RB's. Good job by Nutt to land those guys.
But Nutt dumbed down the O to embarrassing one dimensional levels.
So the question. Did Nutt have so much talent on the Hill that even with his one dimensional style...he was still successful...did he UNDERACHIEVE with this talent?
How would Ark have finished the last two years with ANY RESEMBLANCE of a passing game?
I don't know boys...my guess is we probably have some freakin' talent up on the hill. We had two decent years i | |
