I grew up a Pirate fan as a kid.  I enjoyed watching a skinny Barry Bonds hit 47 homers at the age of 28 in one of his many MVP years.  When the Pirates decided they didn't need to win anymore, I searched for a new team and it was the Giants because of Barry Bonds.  I didn't want to miss a game, but now the Giants are sickening to watch, while the Rays are getting exciting.    Here's what signing Barry could do for the Rays.

1) Put a scare into the Red Sox and Yankees(both full of HGH and steroid useres, so don't tell me how Barry cheated or lied.  So did hundreds of players that are on MLB teams right now).

2) They would be recognized as a team that wants to win, not just save money.  I think it would help their image, not hurt it.

3) Barry is one of the best.  His 2007 on base of .480 was 50 points higher than the next best.  His home run ratio was one of the top 3 in the NL along with Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder.  This is when he had to play the field almost every day.  He would be fresh as a DH.

4) What Bonds did for the rest of his team in SF was remarkable.  Almost every batter in the line-up got better pitches to hit.  Crawford and Upton have already said they would love to have him on the team.  I'm sure any winner would.

5) He could help in the clubhouse.  All you ever read from reporters is how he didn't get along with Jeff Kent.   That was blown out of proprtion, but who has Jeff Kent ever got along with?  You hear about his recliner and big screen TV.  What the younger players have said is how when they are playing cards before a game, he is studying pitchers on his big screen.  They say he is always willing to help then when asked.  Jeff Frandsen had a lot of good things to say about Barry spending time helping with his hitting. The Rays have a lot of good young talent that could learn more about hitting.

6) If they sign him and the Rays fall out of contention, they could trade him for prospects.  It is Win-Win.

7) After not being signed at this point, for the first time in his career, he really has something to prove.  Opponents better watch out.

Just do it!

Wow ok, I do not know where to start on this one so I will just break it down piece by piece so bare with me....

" I grew up a Pirate fan as a kid. Here's what signing Barry could do for the Rays."

Ok so you have bounced team to team based on a player, now you wish for the Rays to sign him. My responses to your comments will explain.

1) Put a scare into the Red Sox and Yankees(both full of HGH and steroid useres, so don't tell me how Barry cheated or lied.  So did hundreds of players that are on MLB teams right now).

So two wrongs equal a right? Barry Bonds is and was a cheater, why bring someone like this who has tarnished the game/his name/his team into a club house of young easily influences especially by a name like Barry Bonds in? That sounds like we are trying to spread cancer wrather than kill it.

2) They would be recognized as a team that wants to win, not just save money.  I think it would help their image, not hurt it.

They would be recognized as a team that wants to self destruct and waste money.

3) Barry is one of the best.  His 2007 on base of .480 was 50 points higher than the next best.  His home run ratio was one of the top 3 in the NL along with Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder.  This is when he had to play the field almost every day.  He would be fresh as a DH.

I agree Barry Bonds WAS one of the best... but he cheated.

4) What Bonds did for the rest of his team in SF was remarkable.  Almost every batter in the line-up got better pitches to hit.  Crawford and Upton have already said they would love to have him on the team.  I'm sure any winner would.

If you haven't noticed the Rays are all about the community...please tell me when at any point did Barry Bonds do something for his community? When did he address the press because also our team has a very POSITVE IMAGE and whenever someone kicks dirt on our name we trade them allah Delmon Young.

Yes they could learn hitting from him but if you take the Pro's and the Con's of Mr. Bonds well, its 1 to 25 in favor of Con's.

6) If they sign him and the Rays fall out of contention, they could trade him for prospects.  It is Win-Win.

Nobody wants him!!!! Thats why he isn't playing right now!

7) After not being signed at this point, for the first time in his career, he really has something to prove.  Opponents better watch out.

First he needs to clear his name, or atleast admit to what hes done...until than like Roger Clemens, they deserve to be on the outside looking in.

These are my opinions bud, take nothing personal.

let me get this straight....you want the Rays to sign Barry Bonds. bring him in to do what exactly? mess up the clubhouse? mess up the chemistry? create a circus atmosphere? lol thats a pretty dumb idea if you ask me.

This is such a terrible idea.  Spending money doesn't not equal results:

1. Barry Bonds will be more of a joke than a scare to Boston and NY.

2.  Look at the Twins, they weren't spending lots of money when they were winning the AL Central every year.  The Orioles have had years when they went crazy with spending.  In case you haven't realized, the Orioles haven't won the AL East in quite some time.

3.Bonds was one of the best maybe 5-7 years ago before his knees went out.  Also, OF and DH are positions the Rays are pretty much set.

4. Crawford and Upton are two guys on a team of 25.  Would he get walks?  Probably.  Are the BBs worth upsetting the locker-room chemistry?  Of course not.

5. Barry Bonds is one of the least likeable people in all of sports, if not the most.  Jeff Kent is just the most vocal example of how players really don't like him.

6. Who is going to want to trade prospects for a washed up player who may be facing jail time in a federal prison?

7. He may have something to prove, but again, his worn out body will not allow him to perform and acheive what he needs to prove.

Nooooooooooo thanks... too many distractions, other reasons too but most of them have been said, but way too many distractions for a young team that is not used to intense media coverage.

I have a question:  What the hell is wrong with the lineup they have now?  They have a bunch of DHs that are coming through for them.  Barry would be an overpriced DH, nothing more and he would want special treatment.

If it was Barry 10 or even 5 years ago, I would say go for it, but not now.

They don't need him to sell tickets.    The fans are going to start coming because they are winning.

The guy will 44 this July. You are kidding yourself.

Good for the clubhouse and trade for prospects???????????????  Are you nuts?   They just got rid of the bad apples who never really were in it for the "team."   Who the hell is going to trade ANYONE for Bonds?  Every team out there can go sign him without giving up a thing and they are not doing it.  OBVIOUSLY no one wants him.

You need to wake up.  The Rays are GOOD, playoff good.  All the talk about finishing above .500 is a joke to me.  they will be in the wildcard race and possibly more.  They do not need to sign a 44 year old clubhouse divider with an ego bigger than Florida to help anything.
