Give me some answers:
1. Why did we bring Mike Martz in as the offensive coordinator?

2.  Why did we bring in a arguable top 5 receiver of all time in for a two year contract? (Bruce)

3. What is more wrong with our O-Line than what is wrong with our Receiving corp?

4. Why not take a WR with the second pick to develop in the next couple of years under Bruce & Martz?

5. Why do we not draft a true DE which what we needed in Merling?

6. Why do we take OL player with a history of bad knees?

1.  Because he is a great offensive coordinator

2.  He is 34 years old and a longer contract would be stupid

3.  Well we added receivers during the offseason while we lost 3 offensive linemen (Kwame Harris, Justin Smiley, and Larry Allen) and even last season our offensive line was worse than our receiving corps

4.  That is why we have Bryant Johnson.  We also took Morgan, who will fit well in Martz's offense, and signed Cameron Colvin and Robert Jordan.

5.  Merling is certainly not a 3-4 DE and he doesn't have to speed to be an OLB.  Besides, Balmer is better anyway

6.  Because he was the best offensive lineman available at the time of our pick

Fatnastic argument! just to add a little more to your already great assesment.. Larry Allen is still undecided.. so we are missing someone at LG, David Bass (the niners RG) pulled a pec muscle in the offseason and will miss probably all training camp and preseason.  Depth is a major issue on the Line! I have said always that these WR's in this draft were not 1st round talent, and look what happened they weren't! The Niners have Isaac Bruce, Bryant Johnson, Arnaz Battle, and Jason Hill, and now Josh Morgan, did they really need to go after any unproven wr's on the first day? I dont think so! they filled need, yes it wasnt flashy, but Balmer will be a stud opposite Justin Smith in the 3-4, Chilo Rachal might be able to secure the line, maybe fill in for Bass during training camp and end up with Baas at the LG next to Joe Staley with the two rookies splitting rime at RG and Jonas Jennings as the RT.  Not to mention Hietman at center.. this is the smart moves! Although I'm not to sold on Reggie Smith, it's obvious with Walt Harris' age and Shawntae Spencer up for a new contract next year that they needed another CB, Rossum will mainly be the returner maybe a nickle back.  Sorry for all of those out there that wanted a huge name and some flash to this draft, but this in the long run will be better off.

Let's grade  the answers:

1. Correct

2. Wrong He was brought in for his experience in Martz's system and as a mentor for the other young receivers.

3. Wrong  Our receiving corp has no one the next two years past a  last year rookie.

4. Wrong Develop Johnson for one year and let him go. Now that's smart. And Morgan was taken in the 6th round for a reason.

5. Wrong Look at some more BIG 25 boards and tell me where Merling is and Balmer is. Kiper had Merling rated 10 spots higher.

6. Wrong You don't draft in need. When there is better value at the pick. You just don't take a player cause he was the needed position at the time when a player is there that can help the franchise in years to come. Wait till after the draft and try to pick up a FA or undrafted rookie. Plus Nolan did that cause he's about to get fired!!

So 1 out of 5 Hmmmmmm Not a scholar now are we. Don't you think it's better to get a player or players in the draft to better your team for years to come? What do you think The Patriots did? What do you think our own Bill Walsh did? Come on man let's do business and make a fortune 500 company not a dollar store.

2.  Exactly.  He is 34 and 2 years is enough for him to mentor the young receivers we have and contribute

3.  That is your opinion and it is just as wrong as mine.  It is true that both our wide receivers and offensive line sucked last year but during the offseason we brought in two receivers and lost 3 offensive linemen, like I said.  Seems to me that would tilt the suckiness scale more towards the offensive line

4.  Who says we are going to develop him for only one year?  We signed him to a one year contract to see what he is capable of and we will resign him if he does well.  Would you have rather seen us sign him to a 7 year, $40 million contract?  What is he turned out to be a bad receiver?

5.  I should have said Balmer is better in my opinion but that doesn't even matter because Merling is not suited for a 3-4 defense

6.  Smart teams do draft based on needs.  You know what team has been drafting based on talent for the past 10 or so years?  The Arizona Cardinals.  You know how many winning seasons they have had in the past 10 years?  One.  Teams like the Colts and the Patriots draft based on positions they need

1.  Martz was brought in because our offense was last in the NFL last year and he is a proven OC.  He will also help our QBs.  They will still get sacked alot but the numbers should be better.

2.  Bruce knows Martz system and he will be a mentor for all the WRs.  He will also be productive.

3.  We lost 3 OL so we needed depth not to mention that we also were tied with the Lions with the most sacks given up last year (55).  Gore did not have thesame holes to run through last year as he did when Norv was the OC.

4.  There were no outstanding WR to take.  The first WR picked was not even one of the WRs prjected to go in the first round.  WRs are really hit or miss.  Most WRs drafted in the first round don't amount to anything.  I.E. Raushan Woods and JJ Stokes.  Keyshawn Johnson was the #1 overall pick when he was drafted.  Decent WR but not great or better than T.O.

5. Merling was not a true defensive end either.  Less than 280 lbs. and they were saying he could be a pass rushing linebacker.  Balmer is bigger and can play DT and DE.

6.  I don't know about this linemen's injury history but Frak Gore had a history with injuries too.  Only we took him in the 3rd instead of 2nd.
