GOLF got bigger after Arnie, and will get bigger after Tiger.
sorry...gotta disagree here. and the tv and attendance records and ratings will bear me out. there is a noticable drop in both since he has been injured....both times!.....now, lets look foward and say Tiger can no longer play....ever. there will be a slump period for quite some time, and you HOPE that it will not last. and i will agree to a point, BUT only if someone else steps up....and i mean a new face, not someone currently on tour.
the tourny's have been nothing short of abysmal since he has been gone. i believe some posters WANT to BELIEVE that golf is just as good, but they KNOW it is not. stop the madness!!......look what happened to the NBA's ratings after MJ left....pure crap!.....the league went into a serious decline, and was struggling until David Stearn began his assault on the " thug" mentality and image of the league. now it is going thru a rebirth with NEW faces, which the same thing it is going to take for golf to see the type of numbers they have enjoyed in the Tiger era.
but dont kid yourself, or try to kid me, it will NEVER be the same...ever......
jus sayin'.....
iho......

Are you kidding me .. ???? Golf is going to disappear entirely for all of us common folk.
With the rising cost of fuel, courses will be charged more for all those chemicals they put down on the landscape. Maintenance labor will continue to rise as the cost of living continues to climb... after all, how many illegals can the courses afford to hide?? And what about the general charges for greens fees and memberships as they climb to offset all those rising labot costs??
Now that we've established the rising cost of maintenance, think about how fuel costs will affect out own transportation to those course that we currently travel to that are 30 miles out where the air is clean?? If we still can afford cars, the cost of transportation to the course will drain out gambling money. Just think what happens when we start finding alternative transportation.... how will we ever carry our clubs to the course when we're riding bicycles instead of driving cars??
Golf may disappear . . . ... .. ..

Billy Casper played in Arnie and Jack's "Handful" Era ... and Won 51 PGA Tour events and three Majors. Casper is considered by some to have been as good as Jack. Indeed, between 1964 and 1970 Casper Won MORE events than Jack, Gary and Arnie COMBINED!
Here are a couple of comments he made yesterday ... about Tiger and Today's players:
On Tiger -
"When you see a player trying to handle all the pressure in a tournament, you can see their hands wobble and weave. Not Tiger. His hands are locked solid. That's why he performs the way he does. He's the greatest equipped player I've ever seen. All of us are very fortunate we're alive and able to watch him play
"What he did at the U.S. Open a few weeks back was absolutely unbelievable."
On Players from HIS Era and Today-
"These guys are athletes. We were not athletes. Gary Player was an athlete and a few others were athletes. But on a whole, we weren't athletes. We didn't work out all the time and work at our game all the time."
... hmmm ... where have we heard THAT before?!
Finally, here's a Golf Channel Video that some may find interesting:

Hmmmmmm, Dim....Casper was fat and out of shape with a big beer belly, and admittedly, not very athletic.....It seems you two have A LOT more in common than merely an opinion....!!!!

I'm back, and with me comes my mantra "The game of GOLF is bigger than any one individual."
No Tiger in The Open being played right now, and looky look, we have the Great White Shark at the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes. Different animal, same difference.
This is great stuff! Proves my point that it DOESN'T suk without TIger.
Regarding Billy Casper's comments... I don't agree with him. If I'm not mistaken, he played some 30 tournaments a year. Have any of you tried to walk six rounds a week (two practice rounds, four tournament rounds) 30 out of 52 weeks? It's not easy to do that for ONE week. I know, I've been there, done that, and I usually lose about 10 pounds those weeks and I'm 6'1", 185 lbs. Fortunately, I do that just once or twice a year. Those guys did it 30 times a year. They had to have been in pretty darned good shape. They didn't work out and they didn't practice as much, so what? They were the best golfers in the world.
And Casper wasn't fat back in the 1960's. Look at him beating Palmer in the 1966 US Open, he was slim, almost as slim as Palmer. He was in good enough shape to win 50 tournaments. He didn't gain all that weight until he reduced his playing time, and started riding carts.

Deadnutz... There's a difference between being "fit" and being "athletic". I've seen 80 year old wimmin who Mall Walk more in a week than Casper EVER walked in a week ... but trust me, they ain't ATHLETES.
Sorry, but walking just ain't an athletic endeavor where golf is concerned.
Furthermore, I SERIOUSLY doubt Casper played 30 tourneys a year (unless he was the Vijay Singh of his day). It's a very common MISconception that players in Jack's Era played more than players today. It' simply not true.
Take Jack Nicklaus. In his ENTIRE CAREER, he only played 20 or more PGA events per year 7 times (Tiger has had 5). The MOST he EVER played was 26 PGA events. Beginning in his 12th season as a pro (where Tiger is now), Jack NEVER played more than 18 PGA events in a year. I'm sure that comes as a shock to many, but it's a FACT.
It's simply MYTH that Jack's "Handful" played Veeg-like schedules. Sure ... some of the journeymen would play more often just "to put food on their families" (a Bush-ism) just as we see today from players trying to keep their Tour Cards ... but, that was NOT the case for the Top players.
I'm sick and tired of hearing FALSE allegations about how lazy today's players are (compared to those in Jack's day) simply becuz they don't play 30 or more events per year. Ditto for the misguided souls who | |
