Ok, it appears that we have picked CB Reggie Smith from Oklahoma.

I think this is another good pick.  We definitely need depth in our secondary.  Also, I don't know much about this guy, but apparently he can play FS also.  We definitely need someone to back-up or supplant Mark Roman, whether it be this guy or Dashon Goldson.

Now for rounds 4, 6, and 7, I would like to see another OL pick.  These picks are most likely going to be depth picks at this point, so I am thinking LB is always good and the final pick would be best available.

Reggie Smith is a great pick for us. He is very versatile, can play CB or FS and can also return punts. Im very happy with this pick. I doubt he will be there with our 6th round pick but i would love to have carl nikcs.

I would have taken Cliff Avril before him but I am not unhappy with Smith

I'm confused.

How do the Niners justify not taking Mario Manningham or Early Doucet right here? I doubt James will start. I think one of the WRs had a better chance of starting and contributing.

I'm fine with passing on WR's in round 1.

Passing in Round 2 when WRs with big potential like Malcolm Kelly, James Hardy, and Limus Sweed surprised me. No one in the NFL needs WR's more than SF. 10 WRs were taken in the Second Round. Basically, 1/3 of the NFL (all with less of a WR need than SF) felt a WR had 2nd round talent. Washington got Thomas and Kelly.

SF did just bring in Mike Martz right?

Round 4 pick is a C from TAMU, Cody Wallace.  Played in the Senior Bowl.

Not sure what to think of this one.  We need another OL for sure, and this guy was 1st team All Big 12 the past two years according to ESPN.  From what I remember of TAMU, they run a lot of plays out of shotgun, and I am wondering how this skill set will translate to NFL offense.  I am not sure if they are projecting him as an OG or a C.   He may may be like Adam Snyder has been, a capable multi-position backup.

I am curious what positions will be drafted with our final 2 picks now.

Yeah we brought in Mike Martz, but we could be looking at seeing more playing time from Jason Hill and we also just signed Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce in Free Agency.

Also Mike Martz thinks that he can work a miracle and turn this into a good offence.

Yeah, they brought in Martz.  But they also brought in Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce.  Both Martz and McNolan know what they're getting with both.  If Johnson has a decent start, don't be surprised if they rework his contract mid year.  Nolan needs to win now, and he can't wait for a WR to develop.  Everyone wants the "next Marques Colston" or the "next Tom Brady."  The problem is that these guys are aberrations.  There isn't going to be one of these superstar gems every year.  I have no problem with the Niners' current approach of address both Lines first.

Now they need to pick up one of my Maryland guys!  Erin Henderson is still there.  Backup Ted Linebacker???  Maybe......

i think the reason why we picked him was sort of out of panic. i am not sure if you guys were really paying attention to the draft but right before we picked reggie smith, dan conner the ILB from penn state was drafted. he was projected to go late 1st early second. he would of been great next to Patrick Willis and i think we thought we could get him but they picked him right before us. i didnt really think we needed a CB or even a safety. Michael lewis will be our starter for years to come, Mark Roman is average at best but i see Dashon Goldson on the rise and taking over as time passes. we got enough good corners. Nate Clements is our best, Walt Harris is better then average but is getting there in age, spencer can start for us if needed, brown would of been a 1st rounder last year but his off the field issues made him slip. i would of rather have gotten a WR like manningham but we already drafted him so we cant really do much. he is a good corner/safety dont get me wrong but not really what we need.

here is a video with some good highlights of his 07 year(pretty good IMO).

you guys are driving me nuts with all of this WR talk. we just signed issac bruce and Bryant Johnson. Jason Hill was hurt last year, ashlie lelie will get more playing time this year, and we still have a solid guy in Arnaz Battle. sure we could use another young guy and develop him, but we have bigger needs right now. Shawntae Spencer is always hurt, Walt Harris is old, and Mark Roman isnt anything special. so reggie smith gives us a lot of versatility, and he can return punts. alos the C we drafted is a senior bowl guy, a leader, and the 49ers love those kind of guys. we desperately need help and depth on the Oline and he provides both. also Heitmann is in his last year of contract, so we need another C.

your right and wrong (i think). i like the fact of bringing in Isaac Bruce (though old) who knows Matrz system an can teach young recievers but he only has a 2yr contract and Byrant only signed a 1yr deal. if none of the recievers we have now gets the job done this season it's gonna stink pretty bad knowing we had a chance to grab a good/decent reciever in this yrs draft. i'm all for boosting up both lines but that could've been done in later rounds (hope i'm not the only 1 thinking this)

I agree!! I can't believe how many people are complaining about us not drafting a wideout, I'm pretty sure the scouts and Mcgloughlan know what their doing, and to me it looks like they're drafting players they feel like can come in and contribute right away without the drastic learning curve 99% of all rookie wideouts go through. Nolan needs to win now and not in the three years it would take for a receiver to mature. Not to mention it appears that there aren't any receivers worth a first round pick according to the entire league.

you are correct in the fact that Bruce and Johnson are on short term contracts. however that does give us time to develop Jason Hill, lelie, and our 6th round pick Josh Morgan. there is no sense in using a high pick on a guy that doesnt warrant that pick. this was a VERY weak WR class, as shown by none of them being drafted in the 1st round. perhaps next year will be a stronger WR class and we can get one then. as for now, we are set at WR maybe we can bring in a free agent like Cameron Colvin and see what he can do.

Develop Lelie??? # 3 receiver all his career bottom line. He should actually be on the practice squad!! First couple of years yes great speed but that is deteriating. We need a receiver to develop bottom line. Bruce is there to mentor sooooooooo why not bring in a receiver for him to do that? I mean DeSean Jackson is a perfect fit!! Plus in case you didn't hear.......... JERRY RICE has been working with him remotely!! The second round pick should have been a WR or any other player without busted up knees!!

WR's are a dime a dozen and after picking up receivers early in the drafts the past few years, how can we realistically waste a high-end pick on an average WR (anybody who has seen Manningham knows he's only 5' 11" tall and is slow!) considering we've struck gold with players like Willis and Joe Staley.  I do like Deshaun Jackson for Special Teams purposes but as a wide-out he's just okay.  I think he could have done fairly well in Martz's system but we needed and stud OL in the mold of Larry Allen more.  We get a 3rd round excellent athlete who plays 2 positions and can hit.  This wasn't a draft about getting flashy players, it was about getting depth and compliments.  Our first 3 picks will all have a very good chance to start this year.  The first two will be amazingly solid.  It was a good draft.  And our last pick was possibly one of the best special teams players in the draft on defense.
