If he's still available come July 1st, would you guys like to see the Devils sign him? He's only 29, 30 years old and we know what he can do to the other team, not to mention if you put him in the right place, he can score you 15, 20 goals a season. I would love to see what he would do on our second or third line, with Clarkson and Zubrus, and signing Avery would be a little jab at the Rangers for all of our players we took. What do you guys think?
Devilsfan626,I am not saying this because hes a Ranger, and because he helped breakdown marty further then he was, but Avery is a headcase.Have you heard that he wants to work as an intern for Anna Wintour this summerin the fashion industry??(a professional hockey player running downstairs to fill Latter order at Starbucks for moedels at shoots?)Also what has stalled his negotiations with the Rangers was he wants 4 million a year(thats the rumor I heard).I think the Devils would be best to stay away from someone who if you look at his career stats his Goals per year are less then 20.Also he would not be the answer the Devils need, maybe I am being biased but Id rather the Rangers sign him for 4 million and eat up there cap space. We already have a few guy on the Devils who are eating up cap space but not necessarily living up to the money they are making. I would rather the Devils also sign players that Fit there needs and rather then sign guys to keep them away from other teams to hurt them.Doing that never works, just ask the Yankees how that worked when they signed that Cuban pitcher.
They should do it but the Devils are too cheap. This would weaken the Rangers and give the Devils an agitator that we haven't had since Claude Lemieux. Guys like Avery and Claude bring intangibles to the game that can't be measured in stats. They get under your skin and get the other teams off their game. Look what Avery did to Marty. These guys are hated when you play against them but you like them when they are on your team. Signing Avery would bring some energy and life to a team that was for the most part bland all season. But, it won't happen. Lou will probably bring in some more stiffs next year by signing low salary below average free agents. He is making a habit of this the past few years. Must save that money as the rest of the teams in the league are passing us by.
I happen to like Avery but would not like the Devils to get him for the simple reason that they have too many role players as it is. We already have Madden, Pandolfo, Clarkson, Rupp, Brylin. Those players all help win championships but they don't put you over the top. Avery is the same way, they could help win a cup but you still need goal scoring and a great blue line. don't get me wrong, i actually like the way avery plays but i think clarkson could be that guy on the devils
I would much rather see them go after a player like hossa and throw the bank at him to get him to come to NJ. (overpaying a player is the only way to attract a free agent here...especially a free agent in their prime because they know with the Devils defensive style that there stats will suffer)
1. He made $1.9 million this year, which means he's going to ask for a lot more, and if the Devils are going to spend a lot of money, they need to improve scoring, and 15-20 goals, 40-45 points isn't enough.
2. Like others have said, we already have enough defensive forwards. We need the opposite, offensive defenseman.
Nyer you make great points.I heard he wants 4 million a year thats alot for an average below 20 goal scorer. The other argument taking him away from the Rangers to make them weaker doesnt always work. How did that work out for the Yankees when Mr.Contreras flopped??Yankees went after him just to keep him away from the Sox,I just hope the Sox sent the Yanks a Christmas card that year with a Thank you note!!! Also Devils had scoring issues and that wont help with getting an offensive dman to quatreback the power play, nor will it help score Goals.
We need to focus more on our actual needs. He need an offensive defenseman who can quaterback our powerplay. He also need a player that can maintain control of the puck in the offensive zone (Olli Jokinen trade for him). Plus Sean Avery would never want to be on the same team as Broduer and he loves the media spotlight which he can get in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detriot. I think the Rangers will over pay him or the Red Wings will sign him.
