You don't know what you're talking about!!! I guess this paragraph about Merling is untrue off of the www.nfl-draft-site.com ???

Merling has been extremely productive on the football field and has the entire repertoire of pass rushing moves. At close to 280 pounds he also has the girth to hold up against the run. The other thing that makes him attractive to the NFL is his size and strength will allow him to play end in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense. It’s not even out of the question to convert him to outside linebacker. Greg Ellis made the transition for the Dallas Cowboys and both players have almost identical size and abilities, Merling might even be a little quicker than Ellis.

He is a versatile player and Kiper was big on him also. So tell me where you base your information at??? I do my homework son. I don't just write illiterate posts. And if you didn't know THE NINERS RUN A HYBRID 3-4!!! THEY BOUNCE BACK AND FORTH!!! Please dude don't insult my intelligence. I respect you as a Niner fan but some of your posts are partly FICTION AND HIGHLY OPPINIONATED.

Here is Kiper's BIG 25 BOARD. Tell me where Merling is and where Balmer is? This is taken directly off his page.

Wow. I always did have the feeling Mel Kiper might be speaking in code!

What a boring draft for the Niners. If they really had to pick two lineman, I wish they at least would have gone for the more surefire started on the offensive side. We're all so sick of watching those three-and-outs.

Are any of these WRs (including TE Vernon Davis) going to catch any balls thrown by... whoever's throwing them? Davis' hands are brutal.

are you kidding me? nfl-draft-site.com? thats what ur giving me? that site looks like a 5th grader put it together. and if your boy Merling is so good then why didnt he go before Balmer, not to mention the fact that Merling has a sports hernia. ill take Balmer who is a lot bigger and already has experience playing both the end and tackle position. you want to waste time converting Merling to a OLB, when Balmer may be able to start from day one. and what do i write that is fiction? Im sorry but I'll take Mccloughan and Nolan's opinion on a player over yours and some dorks at nfl-draft-site.com which ive never heard of before today.

and bye the way, the reason that the 49ers have been running a hybrid 4-3/3-4 is because we havent had the players to run a true 3-4. Nolan wants to run the 3-4 and now we actually added another guy who allows us to do that.

i just typed in Phillip Merling analysis and that is the first thing I got. That easy. If you have information showing me Balmer is better than Merling; show me! That simple. You're ranting and raving but with no proof of where you get your facts and information from. Every site I have been to as had doubts about Balmer. Merling had a hernia yes but they say he will be fine. Plus they say he is a beast!! Another thing noting to last year. A lot of doubters on taking Willis last year and i said the man is a crazy beast. I told everyone he would be the next Ray Lewis in a few years but hell he showed everybody what he was about his ROOKIE year!!! I'm telling you Merling was the better pick than Balmer. Not saying that Balmer could one day be good but Merling has more upside. I'm finished with this conversation. I am disgruntled about this year's draft but no one knows until the season starts. You or I might have to eat our words. I only hope for a 9-7 10-6 season to show we're on the right track. But if not I hope we do good next year's draft. I don't know about you but I'm tired of our sorry ass offense past Gore. If we don't get something done then our potent defense will soon falter because of time spent on the field.

u say you did your homework but all you did was type his name in google and give me the first site you see. what kind of homework is that? wow, u probably didnt do too well in school if thats your kind of homework. unlike you i actually watch these player and their games, rather than just looking at random sites to get all my information. who knows who will end up being a better player, but i can tell you right now that Balmer has the size to be a much better fit in our system than Merling. in the 3-4 all we need our linemen to do is to occupy the offensive line and not let them get to the second level. if they get sacks great, but that is not their primary responsibility. Balmer has about 30 pounds on Balmer. meaning that he will be much tougher for Olinemen to deal with than Merling who is more of a pass rusher. in addition Balmer has the ability to bulk up a little on slide inside to play the DT. i dont see Merling being able to do that. so maybe Merling can be a great fit for the Dolphins, but I think that if McCloghan and Nolan thought he would be a better fit in our system then they would have drafted him. i guess you dont understand football, bc its not really fair to compare stats with these two guys, they play different positions. so if you want to think Merling is better then go ahead, but I kno that Balmer is bigger and can be a great fit in our 3-4. also, Balmer has been criticized for not showing his potential until his senior year, i would say that is when he finally got some quality coaching in butch davis who has NFL experience, just imagine how much he can imporve with constant NFL coaching for multiple years.

It wasn't just that site. I have been checking out random sites saying Merling was a great DE with versatility in a 3-4 or 4-3. Cause I was looking for a quick reference i just typed it in and that came up. I was just pasting a paragraph that was the closest to what I been hearing about this guy. It was almost perfect as to what point I was trying to make. So that was why I posted it. I mean I have been reading and hearing on ESPN and NFL network on how so many scouts are calling Balmer a one year wonder. I mean when you keep hearing that and I know there's a lot of copy cats it makes you say why are they saying this? Is there any truth? Is it the right pick for the 49ers? I'm fine with this pick but I am not fine with taking Rachael. I think he will be unuseful and will be as much as a backup or practice squad kind of tackle. I want to definitely have a starter in the first round and maybe not an immediate starter but a future starter with our second pick.

Balmer and Merling sound rather similiar except Balmer is listed at 308 lbs and merling is close to 280 lbs.  We don't need a linebacker, so the bigger guy is the right choice to go with.  Balmer can still play DE as well as DT.

I wish all these WR crybabies would shut up.  They cry more than T.O.   You don't win games with just a WR.  We got WRs in free agency.  We did not need none in this draft.  I keep seeing Early Doucet's name.  When is the last time a USC WR has been all that productive.  Keyshawn is the last I can remember.  He was not that great.  Offense and Defensive lines win games and are the reason the WR can catch the ball.  So get off the WR issue.  Jerry Rice has retired and there will NEVER be another WR as good as he was.

I just type a lengthy paragraph and lost it by accidentally clicking the link to the left. So I'm not rewriting it. So I will be brief. I have been hearing so many good things about Merling and his versatility to play 3-4 or 4-3 and the first paragraph I found summed it up to the point I was trying to make that's all. But I am hearing scouts saying Balmer is a one year wonder. I just ask myself  Why are they saying this? Was this pick right for the 49ers? I am fine with Balmer or Merling at that pick but I think The Rachael pick will be nothing but a bust. He might have been the best at his position at that point but I feel it doesn't justify him to be taken at that spot. I rather not scrape the bottom of the barrel cause it is a team NEED. I think when you face a decision like that in business sense you reroute and take what's best for the business in the long run. Because bottom line this still is a business. Do I make sense?
